● ● ● one of these occasions (I think it was in the winter of 1896–1897, but I have not the exact date), a bill of this character was before the legislature, and several of the Detroit students went to Lansing to do what seemed necessary in regard to the bill. On the evening when we were there, the House was in committee of the whole, and at the opening of the session, the Speaker read the names of over thirty persons who wished to speak [about this particular] bill.
