Laura Lathrop (1843–1922) The daughter of a Methodist minister, Laura Lathrop became an invalid at seventeen due to several physical ailments that doctors would eventually pronounce incurable. After her husband’s passing in 1884, and at the urging of friends, she traveled to Chicago, Illinois, in January 1885 to have Christian Science treatment, though she was highly skeptical of it.
