Mark Baker of Bow had been a man quarried from the granite of New England Calvinism, not without family affection and kindly concern for the needy, but stern in devotion to the God of Sinai, that Deity so terrible in His wrath, inexorable in His judgment, absolute in His otherness. Mark himself could be unsparing in his denunciation of religious backsliders, obdurate in his Puritan sense of duty.
