This was evident when, shortly after moving into Pleasant View, she wrote George with a touch of initial amusement in regard to his winning the last of several lawsuits over mining affairs: I should think you would be the terror of the West in such matters. But dear child, when will you have a house for your family in a pleasant location and such an one as young ladies would feel pleasantly over inviting into it the highest toned society? 53 The family in Lead, South Dakota, may have had its own moment of amusement, or bewilderment, over her desire to export to their easy-going community the social standards of the eastern seaboard.
