- The Terms of Service and the Permissions Page define in detail the permissions and restrictions on content use. If you have questions or would like to request additional permission to share content, please contact copyright@csps.com.

- Can you tell me more about privacy and security on JSH-Online?
- Please refer to the JSH-Online Privacy Policy for detailed information.
Digitizing the JSH-Online Archive from 1883-Today
- How was the digitization of the periodical content accomplished?
- Every copy of the Journal, Sentinel, and Herald, including covers, was scanned using high-quality image scanners. To improve the readability of the issues, the text prior to 1970 was digitally enhanced to make faded words darker, and more legible. We also placed each page on a white background to make it easier to view. If a reader finds a page image that is unreadable, please let us know by using the Site Feedback feature so we can replace the unreadable image as quickly as possible.
- In addition to a scanned image of each issue, the text of every article was digitized for electronic display and searching.
- Transferring 500,000 print pages of Journal, Sentinel, and Herald, to digitized text required careful design to guide the automation and the extensive manual labor involved. A substantial Coding Guide was written for the digitization process. The rules in the Coding Guide allowed someone unfamiliar with the original content to look at the original print page and use visual clues to identify and tag various elements - such as title, author, contributor, deck, kicker, section, article type, byline, dateline, sidebars, block quotes, pull quotes, line and paragraph breaks, references to the Bible and Mary Baker Eddy's writings, and even the start and end of an article. A related set of rules in the form of a computer program read these tags to reformat the text for consistent display on a screen, and to store the text in a database for easy searching.
- The project team at CSPS worked closely with outside experts to define rules that would be simple enough to train over 100 overseas coders, but flexible enough to deal with variations across 129 years of publishing, during which the many text elements listed above changed position, typeface, and styling to provide variations and innovations in print page design. Where we were unable to create a rule with enough flexibility to deal with the variations, we worked to develop a plan for enhancing the digitized content in a later phase. Thus the digitization process will continue after the launch of the database.
- Why do I find typographical and other errors in the text?
- Transcribing from ink on paper to digital text involves many manual steps. You will find that there are occasional typographical or other errors in the JSH-Online archive, and we invite you to help us correct them. If you find errors in the text, please let us know by going to the Article Feedback feature so they can be fixed as quickly as possible.

Concord Express
- Do you have to own or subscribe to Concord to be able to use the Concord Express feature?
- No. Concord Express is an integral feature of JSH-Online which is included in your JSH-Online subscription.
- What is Concord Express?
- The Concord Express sidebar widget is an easy way to search or access the King James Version of the Bible and writings of Mary Baker Eddy directly on JSH-Online.
- Concord Express is also an integral part of the JSH-Online archive of Sentinel and Journal articles. Whenever an author has quoted from the Bible or Mary Baker Eddy’s writings, giving a specific citation, that citation appears as a link which you can click to take you back to the original source.
- Concord Express also features an audio player which plays a continuous audio stream of Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy.
- I found a citation in a Journal or Sentinel article that wasn’t linked to Concord Express—why not?
- To create a link to Concord Express, three elements were required in the original article: a book name, a page or chapter number, and a text string in quotes. When one of these elements is missing in the original article, a link cannot be made.
- Additionally, quotes in early articles cannot be linked to Concord Express because they refer to early editions for which the page and line numbers do not correspond to Concord books. For this reason, there are no links for quotes from Science and Health prior to June 1911, no links to Mrs. Eddy’s other books until January 1915, no links to the Hymnal until 1933.
- It is not possible at this time to make links from non-English quotes in Heralds.
- If you see citations for which you think a link could be made, please let us know by using the Article Feedback or Site Feedback features. We will happily review your suggestion, determine if a link can be made, and make it as soon as possible.

- Images, for which we do not have rights for online use.

- What is the best way to find Mary Baker Eddy’s contributions to the periodicals?
- A special feature allows you to refine your search to Mary Baker Eddy’s contributions to the periodicals, under any of the bylines she used. All of Mary Baker Eddy’s known contributions matching your search will appear in the search results.
- You can also search under a specific byline Mary Baker Eddy used, by typing that name in the “Search by Author” box using quotations on the Advanced Options page (e.g. “M.B.G.Eddy”)
- See also the Search Help entry for this topic: http://jsh.christianscience.com/searchhelp#articles-by-mbe
- Can I search audio content on JSH-Online?
- Yes. You can search non-transcribed audio content on JSH-Online by title, guest name, date, or by keywords which appear in the introduction texts or descriptions included with each audio podcast, chat, or program.
- You can also search for radio and other audio programs transcribed and published in the print periodicals in the JSH-Online database.
- Have you assigned a topic to each article, and can I search by those topics?
- We have not assigned topics to each article. However, subscribers can add topics to articles by using the keyword tagging feature at the bottom of each article. This will allow you to highlight what you feel the focus or topic of an article or a testimony is for the benefit of other subscribers. The keyword tags you add will become searchable, and over time this will become another way for users to find what they’re looking for.
- Can I search for translations of articles into other languages?
- In Spring 2013, when the full archive of the German, French, Spanish, and Portuguese Heralds is added to the database, users will be able to search in these languages as well as in English.
- How can I find a specific volume and issue of a periodical?
- JSH-Online is designed to browse past issues by date rather than by volume and issue number. If you know the date of a specific issue, simply go to the “issues” tab on the Sentinel or Journal pages, choose the year and month for the Journal, or further choose the week for the Sentinel.
-
Additionally, it is possible to perform a search from the JSH-Online search box to find a specific volume and issue using the formats shown below. To perform this search, the volume and issue must be preceded with attr_file_code_s: and must be followed with an asterisk (*): attr_file_code_s:JRL_1884_002_12*.
Here are some examples of how to search by volume and issue. Note that the volume and issue both must have leading zeroes, meaning volume will always fill three digits (i.e. volume 8 is 008) and issue fill two (i.e. issue 1 is 01):- JRL_1884_002_12 (for Journal, 1884, Volume 2, Issue 12)
- SEN_1924_026_31 (for Sentinel, 1924, Volume 26, Issue 31)
- JRL_1950_068 (for all Journals from 1950, Volume 68)
- JRL_1950 (for all Journals from 1950)
