The main Western-backed Syrian opposition group says it will attend peace talks in Switzerland after the United Nations withdrew an invitation to Iran. The Syrian National Coalition’s political committee welcomed the UN’s move in a statement Monday and said it confirms participation in the so-called Geneva 2 conference. UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon announced the withdrawal less than 24 hours after he surprised the US and others by saying he had invited Syria’s closest regional ally.

New Jersey’s lieutenant governor on Monday strongly denied a claim that superstorm Sandy relief funding was withheld from a severely flooded city because the mayor wouldn’t sign off on a politically connected real estate venture. Lt. Gov. Kim Guadagno called Hoboken Mayor Dawn Zimmer’s claims “false” and “illogical” the day before Gov. Chris Christie’s second-term inauguration.

Another band of arctic air began creeping into the northern US on Monday, bringing a wave of frigid temperatures that could linger for most of the week across the upper Midwest and New England. Temperatures plunged below zero in North Dakota and northern Minnesota on Monday morning.

President Obama honored Martin Luther King Jr.’s legacy of service Monday by helping a soup kitchen prepare its daily meals, and a host of administration figures fanned out across the capital to appear at holiday events. Obama took first lady Michelle and daughters Malia and Sasha to DC Central Kitchen, which is a few minutes away from the White House by presidential motorcade.

A comet-chasing space probe that has been in hibernation for almost three years has woken up and sent its first signal back to Earth. On Monday the European Space Agency received the all-clear message “Hello World!” from its Rosetta spacecraft some 500 million miles away. Rosetta was put into hibernation in 2011 to conserve energy for its long journey to meet with comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko. If all goes as planned the probe will rendezvous with the comet in the coming months and drop a lander onto its icy surface in November.

The fire chief in Omaha, Neb., said Monday that an explosion and partial building collapse at an animal feed processing plant occurred with 38 people inside. The cause of the blast was undetermined, but there were no hazardous chemicals at the plant. Ten people were taken to hospitals, with four in critical condition.

An American missionary who has been jailed in North Korea for more than a year appeared before reporters Monday and appealed to the US government to do its best to secure his release. The missionary, Kenneth Bae, made the comments at what he called a press conference held at his own request. He was under guard during the appearance. It is not unusual for prisoners in North Korea to say after their release that they spoke in similar situations under duress.
