Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko on Tuesday condemned a push by pro-Russian rebels to take control of the town of Debaltseve in east Ukraine as a "cynical attack" on the ceasefire deal brokered in Minsk last week.

Greece is considering requesting an extension to its loan agreement, government officials said Tuesday, in an effort to reach a last-minute deal with the country's European creditors and avoid the danger of a euro exit. The country would submit the request before Friday, said the officials, who spoke on condition of anonymity pending the formal announcement. They stressed the request would not be for an extension of Greece's bailout agreement, which includes strict cost-cutting measures as conditions for rescue loans.

Fires burned for hours Tuesday after a train carrying 109 tankers of crude oil derailed in a snowstorm alongside a creek in West Virginia, sending fireballs into the sky and threatening the water supply of people living nearby. Hundreds of families were evacuated and two water treatment plants were shut down after dozens of the cars left the tracks and 19 caught fire Monday afternoon, creating shuddering explosions and intense heat.

US homebuilders say sales prospects and buyer traffic fell slightly this month. Despite the decline, builders remain relatively optimistic a month before the start of the spring buying season. Lower mortgage rates, coupled with job gains over the past year, point to stronger sales. Expected sales conditions over the next six months have held steady.

Ohio on Tuesday will be the first to administer one of two tests in English language arts and math based on the Common Core standards developed by two separate groups of states. By the end of the school year, about 12 million children in 29 states and the District of Columbia will take them, using computers or electronic tablets. The exams are expected to be more difficult than the traditional spring standardized state exams they replace.
