Several dozen Chinese relatives of passengers on Flight 370 demanded Sunday that Malaysia apologize for its handling of the search for the missing plane and for the prime minister’s statement saying it crashed into the southern Indian Ocean. Two-thirds of the 227 passengers aboard the Malaysia Airlines plane that disappeared March 8 en route to Beijing from Kuala Lumpur, Malyasia, were Chinese, and the plane’s disappearance has sparked broad outrage in China.

Russia on Sunday set out demands for a diplomatic resolution to the crisis in Ukraine, saying the former Soviet republic should be unified in a federation allowing wide autonomy to its various regions as US Secretary of State John Kerry and Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov met in Paris in a bid to calm tensions. Lavrov rejected suspicions that the deployment of tens of thousands of Russian troops near Ukraine is a sign Moscow plans to invade the country.

Anne Hidalgo claimed victory Sunday as Paris’s first female mayor. While the Socialist candidate won Paris, the party lost to the conservatives in dozens of other towns and cities around France in Sunday’s municipal elections. Hidalgo defeated the candidate from the conservative right, former minister Nathalie Kosciusko-Morizet.

Cuban lawmakers on Saturday approved a law aimed at making Cuba more attractive to foreign investors, a measure seen as vital for the island’s struggling economy. It would cut taxes on profits by about half, to 15 percent, and make companies exempt from paying taxes for the first eight years of operation.

About 1,000 Brazilian police officers have begun invading a massive complex of slums near Rio de Janeiro’s international airport, the latest impoverished area to be targeted for the government’s “pacification” program. The security effort began in 2008 and is meant to help secure Rio before this year’s World Cup and the 2016 Olympics.

American mediators held urgent contacts with Israeli and Palestinian officials Sunday in hopes of salvaging troubled Mideast peace talks – searching for a formula to bring the sides back together and extend the negotiations beyond a current late-April deadline.

The first round of Egypt’s presidential election will be May 26 and 27, the electoral commission said Sunday. Results for the crucial vote widely expected to be won by the country’s former military chief. are expected by June 5. If a second round is necessary it will be held by mid-month.

Experts say a bigger earthquake along the lesser-known fault that gave southern California a moderate shake could do more damage to the region than the long-dreaded “Big One” from the more famous San Andreas Fault. The Puente Hills thrust fault, which brought Friday night’s magnitude-5.1 quake centered in La Habra and well over 100 aftershocks by Sunday, stretches from northern Orange County under downtown Los Angeles.
