A federal judge declared a same-sex marriage ban in deeply conservative Texas unconstitutional on Wednesday, but will allow the nation’s second most populous state to enforce the law pending an appeal that will likely go to the US Supreme Court. Judge Orlando Garcia issued the preliminary injunction after two gay couples challenged a state constitutional amendment and a longstanding law.

Israel has opened a new front in its attempts to halt weapons smuggling to Hezbollah, striking one of the group’s positions inside Lebanon for the first time since the sides fought a war eight years ago. This week’s airstrike, meant to prevent the Islamic militant group from obtaining sophisticated missiles, is part of a risky policy that could easily backfire by triggering retaliation.

An Egyptian court convicted 26 people Wednesday of forming a terrorist group to launch an attack on the country’s vital Suez Canal waterway, with almost all receiving death sentences in absentia. The verdict by the Cairo Criminal Court came after judges held only one session in the case. One of the defendants, younger than 18, did not receive a death sentence, a statement announcing the verdict said. It did not elaborate.

Russia says it plans to expand its worldwide military presence by seeking permission for Navy ships to use ports in Latin America, Asia, and elsewhere. Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu said Wednesday the military was conducting talks with Algeria, Cyprus, Nicaragua, Venezuela, Cuba, Seychelles, Vietnam, and Singapore. He said that it was essential for the Russian Navy to be able to call at their ports to service its ships.

Syrian Army troops on Wednesday killed 175 rebels, many of them Al Qaeda-linked fighters, in an ambush described as one of the deadliest attacks by government forces against fighters near Damascus, according to state media. An opposition group said the dawn ambush – part of a government effort to secure the capital – was carried out by the Lebanese Hezbollah group, which has been instrumental in helping President Bashar al-Assad’s regime push back rebels entrenched in the suburbs of the capital city.

An Al Qaeda-inspired extremist was sentenced to life without parole Wednesday for hacking an off-duty British soldier to death on a London street in front of horrified passersby. The day ended in drama when Michael Adebolajo and an accomplice were pinned to the ground and led out of the courtroom in London after scuffling with guards and shouting at the judge moments before their sentences were read out.

A northern California couple out walking their dog on their property stumbled across $10 million in rare gold coins buried in the shadow of an old tree. Nearly all of the 1,427 coins, dating from 1847 to 1894, are in uncirculated, mint condition, according to a coin grading service that recently authenticated them.
