Time for space cooperation

Competition can be healthy. Humanity, however, might find cooperation more practical in space. Why not start there?

A protest by about 300,000 Ukrainians angered by their government’s decision to freeze integration with the West turned violent Sunday, when a group of demonstrators besieged the president’s office and police drove them back with truncheons, tear gas, and flash grenades. Dozens of people were injured. The mass rally in central Kiev defied a government ban on protests on Independence Square.

Riot police fired tear gas at antigovernment mobs trying to force their way into the prime minister’s office complex and Bangkok’s police headquarters on Sunday, deepening Thailand’s political crisis and raising fears of prolonged instability in one of Southeast Asia’s biggest economies. Mobs also besieged at least three television stations, demanding they broadcast the protesters’ views and not the government’s.

The US is urging North Korea to release an 85-year-old American who’s been detained for more than a month. Retired finance executive Merrill Newman, who fought in the Korean War, was taken off a plane Oct. 26 by North Korean authorities while preparing to leave after a 10-day visit. Newman’s son has said his father wanted to return to the country where he spent three years during the war.

Human Rights Watch on Sunday urged Egypt’s military-backed government to immediately release from detention five aides of ousted Islamist President Mohamed Morsi. The New York-based advocacy group said in a statement that the five have been held at an undisclosed destination since July 3, the day when the military ousted Morsi after millions demonstrated demanding he step down.

India’s Mars orbiter mission left Earth’s sphere of influence early Sunday after performing a maneuver to put it on its way to orbit the red planet. India launched its first spacecraft bound for Mars on Nov. 5, a complex mission that it hopes will demonstrate and advance technologies for space travel.

A New York City commuter train rounding a riverside curve derailed Sunday, killing four people and injuring more than 60 in a crash that threw passengers from the toppling cars and left a chain of twisted wreckage just inches from the water. Gov. Andrew Cuomo said the track did not appear to be faulty, leaving speed as a possible culprit for the crash.

A majority of Croatians voted in a referendum Sunday to ban gay marriages in what is a major victory for the Roman Catholic Church-backed conservatives in the European Union’s newest nation. The state electoral commission, citing near complete results, said 65 percent of those who voted answered “yes” to the referendum question: “Do you agree that marriage is matrimony between a man and a woman?”

Massachusetts State Police say freezing rain was to blame for a crash involving 65 cars and three tractor-trailers that closed Interstate 290 in Worcester Sunday. About 35 to 40 people were taken to local hospitals. Two were seriously injured.
