Venezuelan president Nicolas Maduro’s government on Monday gave three US Embassy officials 48 hours to leave the country, accusing the Obama administration of siding with student protesters accused of inciting violence. The announcement by Foreign Minister Elias Jaua came amid fears that renewed clashes could erupt today when both pro- and antigovernment activists have announced plans for demonstrations in the capital.

US Secretary of State John Kerry on Monday accused Syrian President Bashar al-Assad of stonewalling in peace talks and called on Russia to push its ally to negotiate with opposition leaders. Kerry’s remarks were shared during a press conference in Jakarta with Indonesian Foreign Minister Marty Natalegawa.

On Day 11 at the Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia, American figure skaters Meryl Davis and Charlie White won the gold in ice dance, finishing just ahead of longtime training partners Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir of Canada. It was the first Olympic title in the event for the US. Belarussian Darya Domracheva became the first female ever to win three biathlon titles at the same Olympics. The US and Canada advanced to the championship game in women’s ice hockey; and Germany won the men’s team ski jumping gold, raising its Games-leading total to eight.

Italy’s president on Monday asked the young leader of the Democratic Party, Matteo Renzi, to try to form a new government after Renzi managed to oust the previous premier in a power grab. Renzi, the mayor of Florence, met for more than an hour with President Giorgio Napolitano. Afterward he said he would go to work immediately on forging a new coalition.

An Ethiopian Airlines copilot locked his colleague out of the cockpit, hijacked a Rome-bound plane, and landed Monday in Geneva, all in an attempt to seek asylum in Switzerland, officials said. The Boeing 767-300 plane with 202 passengers and crew had taken off from the Ethiopian capital of Addis Ababa. Officials said no one on the flight was injured and the hijacker was taken into custody.

A member of the Pakistani government committee tasked with negotiating with the Taliban says they have cancelled a scheduled round of talks after claims by militants that they killed 23 soldiers in their captivity. Irfan Sadiqui said in a statement Monday that there is no point meeting the Taliban’s representatives after the killings. A faction of the Pakistani Taliban announced late Sunday that they had killed the soldiers, who they said had been kidnapped in 2010.

Eric Barron, a former professor and dean at Penn State University and president of Florida State University, was chosen Monday to lead Pennsylvania’s largest university as it continues grappling with fallout from the sex-abuse scandal of former assistant football coach Jerry Sandusky. Barron will bring with him the experience of managing a major state university with ties to big-time college athletics.
