An air search in the southern Indian Ocean for possible objects from the missing Malaysia Airlines plane described as the “best lead” so far ended Thursday without success but will resume today, Australian rescue officials said. The four planes were checking to see if two large objects spotted in satellite imagery bobbing in the remote ocean were debris from Fight 370, which disappeared March 8 with 239 people on board.

Pro-Russian forces seized three Ukrainian warships Thursday and Ukraine said its troops were being threatened in Crimea. Tensions in the region remained high despite the release of a Ukrainian naval commander held by pro-Russian forces.

Syrian troops closed a border crossing with Lebanon on Thursday amid heavy clashes with rebels in the area that activists said killed 12 people. The fighting forced dozens of wounded to pour across the volatile boundary to seek help on the Lebanese side, officials and activists said. Syrian troops backed by fighters from Lebanon’s Hezbollah group have been on the offensive over the past months in areas close to the Lebanese border, aiming to cut rebel supply lines across the porous boundary.

US immigration authorities on Thursday were interviewing more than 100 people presumed to be in the country illegally after they were discovered crammed into a small house in Houston. Authorities suspect it was a so-called stash house, a place where smugglers bring the people they’ve brought into the US illegally and keep them until they or their family members pay a ransom.

A 16-year-old New Jersey boy described as a thrill-seeker bypassed an inattentive security guard in the middle of the night and climbed a ladder to the spire of 1 World Trade Center, where he apparently took pictures, authorities said Thursday. Justin Casquejo was arrested at 6 a.m. Sunday in New York at the nation’s tallest building and was charged with misdemeanor criminal trespass, police said.
