Attorneys for former NFL star Aaron Hernandez say he is innocent of new charges that he ambushed and killed two men after a chance encounter in a Boston nightclub nearly two years ago. Hernandez was indicted Thursday on first-degree murder and other charges in the July 2012 shooting deaths of Daniel de Abreu and Safiro Furtado.

An Arkansas judge has struck down all state laws preventing gay couples from marrying, expanding on his order finding such bans unconstitutional. Pulaski County Circuit Judge Chris Piazza clarified his ruling on Thursday, a day after the state Supreme Court noted that a prohibition on county clerks issuing marriage licenses to same-sex couples still stood. Piazza also denied the state’s motion to suspend his decision.

A Republican House chairman on Thursday issued a new subpoena for Secretary of State John Kerry to testify about the deadly 2012 attack in Benghazi, Libya, in an escalating fight with the Obama administration over its cooperation with Congress. Rep. Darrell Issa, who heads the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee, said he had no choice as the State Department had failed to negotiate in good faith on an appropriate date for Kerry to testify.

Facing calls to resign, Veterans Affairs Secretary Eric Shinseki said Thursday that he hopes to have a preliminary report within three weeks on how widespread treatment delays and falsified patient scheduling reports are at VA facilities nationwide, following allegations that as many as to 40 veterans may have died while awaiting treatment at the Phoenix VA center.

Ukraine must pay in advance for Russian gas supplies starting next month, Russian President Vladimir Putin said Thursday, raising pressure on the struggling neighbor as Moscow voiced dismay over what it says is Ukraine’s reluctance to implement an international peace plan. Putin said in a letter to European leaders that Ukraine’s debt for Russian gas supplies has reached $3.5 billion, and because of its refusal to pay Moscow, it will have to switch to prepaid gas deliveries starting from June 1.

Crews sopped up the remains of about 10,000 gallons of crude oil that sprayed into Los Angeles streets and onto buildings early Thursday after a high-pressure pipe burst. A geyser of crude spewed 20 feet high over approximately half a mile at about 12:15 a.m.; the oil was knee-high in some parts of the industrial area of Atwater Village before the oil line was remotely shut off, said Fire Capt. Jaime Moore.

Prosecutors indicted the captain of the sunken South Korean ferry and three crew members on homicide charges Thursday, alleging they were negligent and failed to protect more than 300 people missing or dead in the disaster. Less serious indictments were issued against the 11 other crew members responsible for navigating the vessel. The defendants could face the death penalty if convicted.
