Booz Allen Hamilton Inc contractor Yvonne Selke and two other US citizens were among 150 people killed when a Germanwings Airbus crashed into a remote Alpine region in France, the US State Department said on Wednesday.State Department spokeswoman Jen Psaki confirmed that Selke and her daughter, Emily, were on the flight and said a third US citizen was on board. Psaki said that passenger's name was being withheld "out of respect for the family."

Hundreds of civilians, including many children, have been abducted and are being used as human shields by Boko Haram extremists, a top Nigerian official confirmed Wednesday. Several hundred people were taken captive by the Islamic militants as they retreated earlier this month from Damasak in northeastern Nigeria, Mike Omeri, the Nigerian spokesman for the fight against Boko Haram, told The Associated Press Wednesday. He said he could not specify how many were taken captive but local reports say as many as 500 people were seized.

A Wisconsin State Patrol trooper just three months out of the academy died in a shootout with a bank robbery suspect also believed to have killed a motorist. The robbery suspect also died in the shooting Tuesday evening in Fond du Lac, in eastern Wisconsin. Authorities identified the trooper as 21-year-old Trevor Casper. The man Casper confronted was suspected of robbing the State Bank of Florence in Wausaukee, about 130 miles to the north, around 2 p.m., Marinette County Sheriff Jerry Sauve said in a statement.

Italy's high court took up the appeal of Amanda Knox's murder conviction Wednesday, considering the fate of the "very worried" American and her Italian former boyfriend in the brutal 2007 murder of Knox's British roommate. So many journalists and trial-watchers were on hand for the final arguments in the murder of Meredith Kercher that the judges moved the hearing into the largest available courtroom in the Court of Cassation. A decision in the case is not expected until Friday.

E-commerce power Amazon.com blasted federal regulators on Tuesday for being slow to approve commercial drone testing, saying the United States is falling behind other countries in the potentially lucrative area of unmanned aviation technology. Less than a week after the Federal Aviation Administration gave Amazon.com the green light to test a delivery drone outdoors, the company told US lawmakers that the prototype drone had already become obsolete while the company waited more than six months for the agency's permission.

A report from the pro-legalization Drug Policy Alliance released Wednesday showed that marijuana arrests in Colorado all but stopped after voters made the drug legal in small amounts for adults over 21. But, even after legalization, black people were more than twice as likely as white people to be charged with public consumption of marijuana, which remains a crime. Blacks were also much more likely to be charged with illegal cultivation of pot or possession in excess of the state limit, which is an ounce.
