Israel broke off Mideast peace talks and brought the US-brokered process to the brink of collapse Thursday, protesting a reconciliation agreement between the Western-backed Palestinian Authority and the militant group Hamas, the Jewish state’s sworn enemy. The rival Palestinian factions Hamas and Fatah announced the reconciliation plan Wednesday, meant to end a seven-year rift. Israel objects to any participation in Palestinian politics by Hamas.

An Afghan security guard opened fire on a group of foreign doctors at a Kabul hospital on Thursday morning, killing three American physicians and wounding a US nurse, officials said. The shooting at Cure International Hospital in western Kabul was the latest in a string of deadly attacks on foreign civilians in the Afghan capital this year. Two of the dead Americans were a father and son.

Accusing Russia of failing to live up to its commitments, President Obama warned Moscow on Thursday that the US has another round of economic sanctions “teed up.” Meanwhile, an American journalist held by pro-Russia insurgents in eastern Ukraine for several days says he has been released and is in good condition. Simon Ostrovsky of Vice News did not give details of his seizure or release.

A Nigerian rights group is urging the United Nations to help secure the release of some 230 schoolgirls abducted by extremists 10 days ago. More than 40 of the girls and young women kidnapped from a remote northeastern school escaped by themselves but school officials say 230 still are missing.

The captors of an American soldier held for nearly five years in Afghanistan have signaled a willingness to release him but are unclear which US government officials have the authority to make a deal, according to two individuals in the military working for his release. Critics of the release effort blame disorganization and poor communication among the numerous federal agencies involved. Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl has been held by the Taliban since June 30, 2009.

The Costa Rican government says it’s still waiting for the Obama administration to explain why it launched the secret “Cuban Twitter” network from inside the Central American nation’s borders despite warnings in 2009 that the plan could jeopardize the two countries’ diplomatic relations.

Angry relatives of some of the more than 120 people still missing from the sinking of a South Korean ferry surrounded the fisheries minister and the Coast Guard chief Thursday, preventing them from leaving the area in Jindo where families have been waiting for word of their loved ones for more than a week.

Vermont has raised the stakes in the debate over genetically modified foods by becoming the first state to pass a bill requiring that they be labeled as such in the grocery aisle, making the move despite the opposition of the powerful US food industry.
