Russian President Vladimir Putin on Sunday defended the separatist drive in the disputed Crimean Peninsula as in keeping with international law, but Ukraine’s prime minister vowed not to relinquish “a single centimeter” of his country’s territory.Over the weekend, the Kremlin beefed up its military presence in Crimea, a part of Ukraine since 1954, and pro-Russia forces keep pushing for a vote in favor of reunification with Moscow in a referendum the local parliament has scheduled for March 16.

The European Union’s foreign policy chief said Sunday that there is “no guarantee” that Iran and world powers will reach a final deal over the country’s nuclear program. Catherine Ashton was in Tehran for meetings with Iranian officials on ongoing negotiations over the country’s nuclear program, as well as the civil war in Syria and other issues.

A suicide car bomber set off his explosive-laden vehicle at a security checkpoint Sunday in southern Iraq, the deadliest of a series of attacks that killed 42 people, officials said. The violence, which comes a few weeks before scheduled elections, is the latest by insurgents bent on destabilizing the country. The blast struck the entrance of the city of Hillah during morning rush hour as dozens of cars waited to be searched.

China’s exports plunged by an unexpectedly large 18 percent in February, possibly denting hopes trade will help drive the slowing economy while communist leaders push ambitious promised reforms. Exports declined to $114.1 billion while imports rose a stronger-than-expected 10.1 percent to $137.1 billion, customs data showed Saturday.

Arab foreign ministers on Sunday rejected Israel’s demands that the Palestinians recognize it as a Jewish state, saying such a move would undermine the rights of Palestinian refugees. In a resolution released at the headquarters of the Arab League in Cairo, the foreign ministers called the issue of Palestinian refugees an integral part of a comprehensive and just peace. It blamed Israel for the floundering of peace negotiations.

President Obama will meet this week with Ukrainian Prime Minister Arseniy Yatsenyuk, the White House said Sunday, in a prominent show of US support for Ukraine’s fledgling new government. Vice President Joe Biden cut short his trip to Latin America, nixing a planned stop in the Dominican Republic so he can attend Wednesday’s meeting, an aide to Biden said. Biden had been the White House’s prime point of contact with Ukraine’s president, Viktor Yanukovych, before he fled to Russia last month following violent clashes in Kiev.

The highest court of the Maldives has sacked the country’s elections chief and his deputy and given them suspended jail terms for contempt of court after a months-long confrontation. Judges of the Indian Ocean archipelago nation said that the officials had disrespected the court by not following election guidelines set out by them.
