South Korean President Park Geun-hye said Monday that the captain and some crew members of the sunken ferry committed “unforgivable, murderous behavior,” while criticism of her own government’s handling of the disaster grew. As divers continued to search the interior of the submerged vessel, the confirmed death toll rose to 86, according to information from the Coast Guard posted for the victims’ families. About 220 people remain missing.

Japan’s trade deficit surged nearly 70 percent to a record $134 billion in the last fiscal year, the third straight year of deficit, as exports failed to keep pace with surging energy costs. The US Justice Department is broadening the criteria it will use in evaluating clemency petitions from certain federal prisoners and expects the changes to result in thousands of new applications, Attorney General Eric Holder said Monday. The new criteria, which will be detailed later this week and are aimed at inmates serving time for nonviolent drug offenses, are intended to lead to a reduction in the nation’s federal prison population.

Militants from the Gaza Strip fired a missile at Israeli troops patrolling the border and several rockets into the country’s south on Monday, the last day of the Passover holiday, the military said. No injuries were reported. The attacks drew retaliatory airstrikes by Israeli aircraft, hitting targets of the Islamic militant group Hamas, the Israeli military said.

Hundreds of people lined the streets of Nepal’s capital, Katmandu, on Monday as the bodies of 6 of the 13 Sherpa guides known to have died in last week’s worst-ever Mt. Everest tragedy were transported through the city. The disaster has prompted calls for a climbing boycott by the Sherpa community.

AT&T plans a major expansion of superfast Internet services to cover as many as 100 municipalities in 25 metropolitan areas. The service has a 1-gigabit-per-second speed that is about 100 times what US consumers typically get with broadband. That means faster video downloads and the ability for more devices to connect to the network without congestion.

A defendant died after being shot by a US marshal on Monday during an attack on a witness during a trial in a new federal courthouse in Salt Lake City, the FBI said. Gang member Siale Angilau was shot as he rushed the witness with a pen in an “aggressive, threatening manner,” the FBI said.
