A suicide bomber rammed his explosive-laden car into one of two buses carrying off-duty soldiers in Egypt’s turbulent region of northern Sinai on Wednesday, killing 11 and wounding 37, security and military officials said. The northern Sinai region, which borders Gaza and Israel, has been restless for years, but attacks have grown more frequent and deadlier since the July ouster of Islamist President Mohamed Morsi.

President Obama paid tribute Wednesday to former President John F. Kennedy’s legacy, joining former President Clinton to lay a wreath at Kennedy’s grave in Arlington, Va., nearly 50 years after his Nov. 22, 1963 assassination in Dallas. The tribute began at the White House, where Obama bestowed the Presidential Medal of Freedom, created by Kennedy, on prominent Americans including Bill Clinton, Oprah Winfrey, and late astronaut Sally Ride.

Consumers shrugged off the 16-day partial government shutdown and spent more on autos, clothing, and furniture in October, boosting US retail sales by the most in four months. Sales rose 0.4 percent, up from a flat reading in September, the Commerce Department said Wednesday.

Cleaners found a stash of 24 gold bars worth more than $1.1 million hidden in an airplane lavatory after a flight from Bangkok arrived in Calcutta, India, officials said Wednesday. Customs officials confiscated the stash and are investigating.

George Zimmerman is once again a free man after an arrest on criminal charges in Sanford, Fla. – but his freedom carries conditions. The former neighborhood watch volunteer who was acquitted in the fatal shooting of unarmed black teen Trayvon Martin earlier this year was released from jail Tuesday pending arraignment on the latest charges against him: aggravated assault, battery, and criminal mischief.

Florida Republican Rep. Henry “Trey” Radel pleaded guilty Wednesday to a misdemeanor charge of cocaine possession and was sentenced to a year’s probation. As part of a plea agreement Radel acknowledged he agreed to buy the cocaine in Washington, D.C., from an undercover police officer Oct. 29.
