The father of former National Security Agency systems analyst Edward Snowden arrived in Moscow Thursday morning to meet with his son who has received asylum in Russia and has been living at a secret location. Lon Snowden told Russian television outside Moscow’s airport that he doubts Edward will return to the United States, where he is charged with violating the Espionage Act for disclosing NSA’s highly classified surveillance of phone and Internet usage around the world.

Alice Munro, a Canadian master of the short story revered as a thorough but forgiving chronicler of the human spirit, won the Nobel Prize in literature on Thursday. Munro is the first Canadian writer to receive the prestigious $1.2 million award from the Swedish Academy since Saul Bellow, who left for the US as a boy and won in 1976.

The debut of the government’s health insurance marketplaces drew a huge audience – and underwhelming reviews. Just 7 percent of Americans say the rollout of the health-care exchanges has gone extremely well or very well, according to an AP-GfK poll. Despite the bumpy rollout, plenty of Americans are giving the system a try. Seven percent of Americans reported that somebody in their household has tried to sign up for insurance through the health-care exchanges, according to the poll.

Scott Carpenter, the second American to orbit the Earth, died Thursday in Denver. Carpenter followed John Glenn into orbit. The two were the last survivors of the famed original Mercury 7 astronauts from the “Right Stuff” days of the early 1960s. Glenn is the only one left alive. After his one flight, Carpenter found a new place to explore: the ocean floor.

Just a day after he was given bail in a case that was expected to release him from nearly six months of house arrest, police on Thursday once again arrested former Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf, said his spokesman and lawyer. Before he even had a chance to go free, the spokesman said, police arrested Musharraf Thursday for his alleged role in the death of a radical cleric killed during a raid on a hard-line mosque in Islamabad 2007.

Eric Schmidt, Google’s executive chairman, said Thursday that he respects but disagrees with complaints about his company’s privacy policies made by data protection authorities in six European countries. Data watchdogs in France, Britain, Germany, Italy, Spain, and the Netherlands have said Google needs to provide additional guarantees to comply with national privacy protection rules in each of those countries.

Egypt on Thursday decried Washington’s decision to freeze a sizable chunk of its annual $1.5 billion aid to Egypt, saying the move was wrong and ill-timed. In Egypt’s first public reaction, the Foreign Ministry said the American move raised questions about Washington’s commitment to supporting the Arab nation’s security goals at a time when it is facing terrorist challenges.
