Malaysian authorities defended their handling of the hunt for the missing Boeing 777 on Wednesday even as they acknowledged they were unsure which direction the plane was headed when it disappeared, highlighting the massive task facing an international search mission that entered its fifth day. The mystery over the plane’s whereabouts has been confounded by confusing and occasionally conflicting statements by Malaysian officials, adding to the anguish of relatives of the 239 people on board the flight – two-thirds of them Chinese.

Militants in the Gaza Strip fired dozens of rockets Wednesday into southern Israel, sending civilians rushing into bomb shelters but causing no casualties. The Israeli military says it’s the largest rocket barrage since 2012, when it launched an eight-day air campaign in Gaza it said was aimed at stopping the attacks.

President Obama expressed hope Wednesday that a referendum on the future of Ukraine’s Crimean Peninsula can be halted, as he met with the new leader of the former Soviet republic. A gas leak triggered a thunderous explosion that flattened two East Harlem apartment buildings Wednesday in New York, killing at least two people, injuring more than 20, and leaving more than a dozen others missing. One tenant said residents had complained repeatedly in recent weeks about “unbearable” gas smells.

Israel’s parliament on Wednesday voted to begin drafting large numbers of ultra-Orthodox men into the military, moving to end a contentious system that enraged many secular Israelis by allowing young seminary students to evade army service. Parliament also passed a law requiring a national referendum to approve any future withdrawal from east Jerusalem.

In a rare public appearance, President Bashar al-Assad on Wednesday visited displaced Syrians in a frontline suburb of the country’s capital, where he vowed to keep up the fight against gunmen whom he blamed for driving people from their homes, state TV said. The visit to a shelter for displaced people in the Damascus suburb of Adra, just northeast of the capital, coincides with advances by his troops battling rebels who captured parts of the suburb in December, displacing thousands from the area.

A 24-hour strike by civil servants disrupted public services in Greece on Wednesday as the government struggled to hammer out a deal on further austerity measures with international creditors. Thousands of protesters attended rallies in Athens and other cities.
