Republican Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer slapped down the right wing of her own party, vetoing a bill pushed by social conservatives that would have allowed people with sincerely held religious beliefs to refuse to serve gays. The conservative governor said she could not sign a bill that was not only unneeded but would damage the state’s improving business environment and divide its citizens. Senate Bill 1062 had set off a national debate over gay rights, religion, and discrimination, and subjected Arizona to blistering criticism from major corporations and political leaders from both parties.

Recent economic data have pointed to weaker-than-expected gains in consumer spending and job growth, US Federal Reserve Chair Janet Yellen noted Thursday. She said the Fed will be watching to see whether the slowdown proves only a temporary blip caused by severe winter weather. Investors read the remarks as offering at least a hint that the Fed might slow or suspend a pullback in its economic stimulus if the economy faltered.

North Korea fired four suspected short-range missiles into its eastern waters Thursday, South Korean defense officials said, in an apparent effort to protest ongoing US-South Korean military exercises that Pyongyang calls a rehearsal for invasion.

North Korea on Thursday presented to the media a South Korean Baptist missionary whom it says was arrested more than four months ago for allegedly trying to establish underground Christian churches in the country. With officials looking on, Kim Jung Wook said he was sorry for his “antistate” crimes and appealed to North Korean authorities to show him mercy by releasing him.

Turns out the worst state for carbon dioxide emissions per person is Wyoming. New federal figures show Wyoming in 2011 emitted more than 112 metric tons of carbon dioxide per person – more than six times the national average. Wyoming also is the top coal-mining state.
