Almost 70 percent of Americans say a lack of high-speed Internet would prove a "major disadvantage" in a job hunt, according to results of a Pew Research Center survey. The number of households with wired broadband connections has dropped from 70 percent in 2013 to 67 percent, which is the same percentage as 2012. That's not a big change, but it could signal the beginning of a bigger shift, especially in conjunction with an increase in the number of smartphone-only adults from 8 percent in 2013 to 13 percent. Some of this could be the rise in smartphone ownership generally – 68 percent of Americans now own a smartphone, leaving just 17 percent of Internet users without one – but the rise of smartphone-only adults is particularly apparent among blacks and those with low incomes or rural addresses.

A grand jury has decided not to issue any indictment in the hanging death of a 28-year-old black woman in a southeast Texas county jail last summer. The Waller County Prosecutor’s Office said on Monday that the grand jury decided that neither sheriff's officials nor jailers committed a crime in the treatment of Sandra Bland. According to Prosecutor Darrell Jordan, the grand jury will return in January to consider whether to indict the trooper who arrested Ms. Bland.

Beginning Feb. 1, Virginia will no longer recognize concealed handgun permits from more than two dozen states. The move follows an audit conducted by the attorney general’s office and the Virginia State Police pursuant to the state criminal code, which requires both agencies to determine whether reciprocating states “meet the requirements and qualifications” for recognition of their concealed handgun permits.

An unmanned rocket soared toward space Monday night, launched 11 small satellites into orbit, and then made history. In a commercial spaceflight breakthrough, the booster for the Space X Falcon rocket landed back at Cape Canaveral, Fla., unscathed. The 15-story booster gently settled back to Earth, landing upright on the touchdown pad, just 10 minutes after launch.

A man who loaned a gun to the Boston Marathon bombers, who used it kill a police officer three days after the 2013 attack, has been sentenced to time served. Stephen Silva was sentenced by US District Judge Mark Wolf to time served plus three years' supervised release after pleading guilty to drug and firearms charges last year. Mr. Silva testified in March during the trial of Dzhokhar Tsarnaev that he let Mr. Tsarnaev borrow a Ruger 9mm handgun two months before the bombings. He said Tsarnaev told him he wanted it to rob University of Rhode Island students. He also said Tsarnaev “kept coming up with excuses” for why he didn’t return the gun.

In response to a call for a pollinator assessment from the White House, researchers at the University of Vermont have created the first-ever map of wild bee populations across the country. Their research reveals a significant decline of wild bees across many of the nation's key farming regions, according to a paper published Monday in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. And some 39 percent of farmland containing crops dependent on pollination face a dangerous mismatch: the demand for pollination is rising as the population of wild bees is shrinking. Although this report may seem like all gloom and doom for the bees, it could help scientists identify ways to save the bees.
