At least 27 people were killed and dozens injured Tuesday in a stampede during a Hindu religious bathing festival on a river bank in southern India. The stampede occurred in Andhra Pradesh state as tens of thousands of people pushed forward to bathe in the Godavari River on the first day of the Pushkaralu festival, said Arun Kumar, a state administrator. The stampede was triggered by some pilgrims who were trying to retrieve their shoes, which had fallen off in the rush to the river bank, police said.

A 16-year-old girl survived a small plane crash in the rugged mountains of north-central Washington state and then hiked through thick forest to reach safety in what one official called "a miracle." But searchers were still looking for the plane wreckage and her two step-grandparents, who were also on board. There was no official word on the status of the older couple, identified as Leland and Sharon Bowman of Marion, Montana. David Veatch of Bellingham, the father of survivor Autumn Veatch, told reporters outside a Brewster hospital late Monday his daughter was exhausted but doing remarkably well.

No climbers were allowed on Switzerland's Matterhorn mountain Tuesday, as authorities declared a daylong 'silence' on the 150th anniversary of the first ascent to honor more than 500 climbers who have died trying to reach the top. A group of seven mountaineers led by Briton Edward Whymper became the first to scale the peak on July 14, 1865. Four members of the team died on the descent. The solemn silence on the Matterhorn – underlined with the threat of a 5,000 Swiss francs ($5,290) fine – was part of a series of events marking the anniversary, which also included a light display along the route of the original ascent.

A new kind of subatomic particle called the pentaquark has been detected for the first time, the European Organization for Nuclear Research said Tuesday. The lab, known by its French acronym CERN, said the findings were made by a team of scientists working on one of the four experiments at its Large Hadron Collider. Their results have been submitted to the journal Physical Review Letters. The existence of pentaquarks was first proposed in the 1960s by American physicists Murray Gell-Mann and Georg Zweig. Gell-Mann, who coined the term "quark," received the Nobel Prize in 1969.

A loud boom that knocked a Rhode Island beachgoer out of her chair is still a mystery days later, and with no evidence of an explosive device and few clues in the sand, investigators and scientists are wondering whether this was a bizarre case of nature acting up. Among the theories that have been floated: some kind of seismic event, or a methane explosion caused by decayed seaweed or other organic matter under the sand.

Tiger Woods is still gunning for Jack Nicklaus' record of major golf championships. Despite a slump that has sent him plummeting to No. 241 in the world golf rankings, Woods remains confident he can win at least four more majors in his career. Woods comes into this week's British Open at St Andrews with 14 major titles on his resume, but his last victory in one of golf's biggest events came at the 2008 US Open. Nicklaus holds the record with 18 championships.
