An American chemistry teacher was shot to death as he was jogging in Benghazi on Thursday, highlighting persistently tenuous security in the eastern Libyan city where the US ambassador was killed last year. There were no credible claims of responsibility, but suspicion is likely to fall on Islamic militants active in Benghazi. It came five days after Al Qaeda called upon Libyans to attack US interests everywhere as revenge for US special forces snatching an Al Qaeda suspect off the streets of Tripoli in October.

Two men who have been held without charge at the Guantánamo Bay for more than a decade have been sent back to their native Algeria as part of a renewed effort to gradually close the prison, US officials said Thursday.

The United Nations planned to authorize within hours an intervention force into the near anarchic and impoverished nation. Thursday’s fighting was between the mostly Muslim fighters who control the impoverished nation and Christians who support its ousted president.

The number of Americans applying for unemployment benefits tumbled 23,000 last week to 298,000, nearly a six-year low that shows companies are laying off fewer workers. The Labor Department said the less volatile four-week moving average declined 10,750 to 322,250.

The Defense Ministry in Yemen came under attack Thursday from a suicide car bomber and heavily armed gunmen, killing 52 people and wounding 167 in a fierce battle in the heart of the capital, Sanaa, the government said. Nobody immediately claimed responsibility for the assault, but suicide bombings and complex attacks are the hallmarks of Al Qaeda.

Florida State quarterback and Heisman Trophy candidate Jameis Winston will not be charged with sexually assaulting a woman who accused him of raping her about a year ago, a prosecutor said Thursday. State Attorney Willie Meggs said the woman’s memory lapses of the events last December were problematic.
