US Secretary of State John Kerry moved Sunday to reassure America’s Arab friends that the United States will not allow them to be attacked “from outside,” in an apparent warning to Iran. He spoke in Egypt while en route to Saudi Arabia, where he hopes to mend relations strained by Saudi unhappiness with US actions in Syria, its tentative warming with Iran, and its stance on Egypt.

Toronto Mayor Rob Ford apologized Sunday for being “hammered” in public and acknowledged the need to curb his drinking, but the mayor of Canada’s largest city didn’t address allegations of drug use and said he will remain in his job despite mounting pressure to resign.

Egyptian authorities on Sunday moved the trial of the ousted Islamist president to a new location at another end of Cairo, a move apparently aimed at thwarting mass rallies planned by the Muslim Brotherhood in his support when the trial opens today. Facing charges of incitement of violence with 14 others in connection to clashes last December, Mohamed Morsi has been held at an undisclosed location since his July 3 overthrow by the military. The trial will be his first public appearance since then.

More than 20,000 people were evacuated from their homes Sunday in the west German city of Dortmund as authorities prepared to defuse a bomb left over from World War II. The 4,000-pound bomb was discovered after experts analyzed old aerial photographs while searching for unexploded ordnance dropped by Allied aircraft over Germany’s Ruhr region.

A boat carrying 70 ethnic minority Muslim Rohingya capsized Sunday off the western coast of Myanmar (Burma), an aid worker said. Only eight survivors have been found. The incident comes after the United Nations warned that an annual and often deadly exodus of desperate people from Myanmar’s Rakhine state appears to have begun.

Gunmen abducted and killed two French radio journalists in northern Mali Saturday, French and Malian officials said. It was not immediately clear who carried out the killings, though suspicion fell on Al Qaeda’s branch in the region. The murders came less than a week after France rejoiced at the release of four of its citizens, who were freed after three years by Al Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb.

Iran’s supreme leader warned Sunday against undermining negotiators engaged in talks with the West, a message directed apparently at hard-liners who have criticized Iran’s diplomacy over its nuclear program. The remarks by Ayatollah Ali Khamenei were his latest show of support for President Hassan Rouhani’s policy of outreach to the West. They come ahead of a new round of talks scheduled for Thursday in Geneva.

A second Bay Area Rapid Transit labor union ratified the contract agreement that brought to an end a bitter labor dispute that led to two San Francisco area transportation strikes, officials said Saturday.
