The Syrian government allowed supplies to enter two contested frontline areas near the capital, a relief official said Thursday. Activists said the death toll from two weeks of infighting in the north between rebel forces and an Al Qaeda-linked group climbed to more than 1,000 people. The head of the Syrian Arab Red Crescent, Khaled Iriqsousi, told The Associated Press that enough supplies to feed 10,000 people for a month entered the Damascus suburbs on Thursday.

Having secured victory in a referendum on a relatively liberal constitution that he championed, Egypt’s military chief is turning his attention to the country’s overwhelming array of problems – from health and education to government subsidies and investment, insiders said Thursday. The revelations offer the latest indication that Gen. Abdel-Fattah el-Sissi is planning a run for president.

US consumer prices rose last month by the most since June, driven up by higher gas prices, but excluding energy, inflation was tame. The Labor Department said Thursday that the consumer price index rose a seasonally adjusted 0.3 percent in December, after a flat reading the previous month.

Major League Baseball will greatly expand instant replay to review close calls starting this season. MLB announced Thursday that owners, players, and umpires have approved the new system. Each manager will be allowed to challenge at least one call per game. If he’s right, he gets another challenge. After the seventh inning, a crew chief can request a review on his own if the manager has used his challenges. To make baseball reviews uniform, cameras will record 12 angles from each ballpark.

Members of Al Qaeda’s branch in Iraq have handed out pamphlets urging residents in Fallujah to take up arms and back the militants in their weeks-long fight against government troops as clashes raged on around the city, residents said Thursday. Since late last month, Iraqi security forces and allied Sunni tribesmen have been fighting to recapture key territories overrun by Al Qaeda militants in the country’s Sunni-dominated Anbar Province.
