The Olympic flame was snuffed out Sunday as the Winter Games completed a 17-day run in Sochi, Russia, with Canada’s 3-0 victory over Sweden in the men’s hockey final, the last of 98 gold medal events. The end of the $51 billion extravaganza came on a day when Russia captured the medals race and International Olympic Committee President Thomas Bach lauded the host city for its “amazing” transformation. At the closing ceremony, a giant mascot bear blew out the flame and sent the Olympics on their way to Pyeongchang, South Korea in 2018.

Afghanistan’s Taliban said Sunday it has suspended “mediation” with the US to exchange captive Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl for five senior Taliban prisoners held at Guantánamo Bay, halting – at least temporarily – what was considered the best chance yet of securing the soldier’s freedom since his capture in 2009. A Taliban spokesman blamed the “current complex political situation in the country” for the suspension.

Finance chiefs from the 20 largest economies agreed Sunday to implement policies that will boost world gross domestic product by more than $2 trillion over the coming five years. Australian Treasurer Joe Hockey, who hosted the Group of 20 meeting in Sydney, said the commitment from the G20 finance ministers and central bankers was “unprecedented.” The world economy has sputtered since the 2008 financial crisis and global recession.

Gunmen in a pickup truck attacked an antigovernment protest in Thailand’s east, killing at least one, an 8-year-old girl, and wounding dozens, as violence in the country’s 3-month-old political crisis spread outside the capital, Bangkok, officials said Sunday.

Russian Finance Minister Anton Siluanov said Sunday that Ukraine should seek a loan from the International Monetary Fund to avoid an imminent default, but would have to meet demands for difficult structural reforms. Russia in December offered Ukraine a $15 billion bailout, but so far has provided only $3 billion, freezing further disbursements pending the outcome of the ongoing political crisis.

Jason Collins became the NBA’s first active openly gay player Sunday, signing a 10-day contract with the Brooklyn Nets. Collins was scheduled to join the Nets for their game Sunday night in Los Angeles against the Lakers. The journeyman center revealed at the end of last season he is gay, but he was a free agent and had remained unsigned.

Alice Herz-Sommer, believed to be the oldest Holocaust survivor, died at age 110 on Sunday, in London. The accomplished pianist’s death came just a week before her extraordinary story of surviving two years in a Nazi prison camp through devotion to music and her son is up for an Oscar. Herz-Sommer, her husband, and her son were sent from Prague in 1943 to a concentration camp in the Czech city of Terezin, where inmates were allowed to stage concerts in which she frequently starred.
