Staples Inc is investigating a possible breach of payment card data, making it the latest US retailer to become a possible victim of a cyberattack. "Staples is in the process of investigating a potential issue involving credit card data and has contacted law enforcement," company spokesman Mark Cautela said in a statement late Monday. The office-supply retailer disclosed the investigation after security reporter Brian Krebs reported on Krebsonsecurity.com that several banks have identified a pattern of payment card fraud suggesting that several Staples stores in the northeastern United States had succumbed to a data breach.

Oscar Pistorius was taken away in a police van with barred windows Tuesday to start serving a five-year prison sentence for killing girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp last year. Delivering her sentence, Judge Thokozile Masipa cited the "gross negligence" the double-amputee Olympic runner showed when he shot Steenkamp multiple times through a toilet cubicle door in his South African home. Pistorius was unemotional as he stood to hear his sentence. His prison term begins immediately, but he could be released after 10 months in jail to serve the remainder under house arrest, according to legal experts.

American detainee Jeffrey Fowle has been released from North Korea, nearly six months after he was taken into custody on charges of leaving a Bible in a nightclub, the State Department said Tuesday. Two other Americans who have been tried and convicted of crimes in North Korea are still being held. White House spokesman Josh Earnest said it was a positive decision by North Korea to release Fowle. He urged Pyongyang to release the other Americans, Kenneth Bae and Matthew Miller.

One of two Canadian soldiers hit by a car in a city near Montreal has died and authorities are examining whether the driver's links to radical Islam had spurred the attack. Neighbors said he was a recent convert. Quebec provincial police spokeswoman Genevieve Bruno confirmed Tuesday one of the two soldiers died from his injuries. The other soldier's injuries were less serious. The soldier's name was not released at the request of the family. The suspect, Martin Couture Rouleau, 25, was shot by police following a car chase and later died.

At his Fashion Week runway show in September, Oscar de la Renta sat in his usual spot: in a chair right inside the wings, where he could carefully inspect each model just as she was about to emerge in one of his sumptuous, impeccably constructed designs. De la Renta, who dressed first ladies, socialites and Hollywood stars for more than four decades, died Monday evening at his Connecticut home, only six weeks after that runway show. But not before another high-profile honor was bestowed on him: The most famous bride in the world, Amal Alamuddin, wore a custom, off-the-shoulder de la Renta gown to wed actor George Clooney in Venice.

Defensive end Michael Sam, who hopes to become the first openly gay athlete to play in a regular-season National Football League game, was released on Tuesday by the Dallas Cowboys. Sam, who joined the team on Sept. 3, spent the first seven weeks of the season on the 10-man practice squad and never made it to the 53-man roster.
