Suspected Islamic extremists attacked an agricultural college in the dead of night, gunning down dozens of students as they slept in dormitories and torching classrooms in an ongoing Islamic uprising in northeast Nigeria, the school’s provost said. As many as 50 students may have been killed in the attack that began at about 1 a.m. Sunday in rural Gujba, Provost Molima Idi Mato of the Yobe State College of Agriculture told The Associated Press.

NASA’s newest delivery service pulled up at the International Space Station on Sunday after a week’s delay, bringing more than a half-ton of meals and special treats to the astronauts who assisted in the high-flying feat. With the smooth linkup, Orbital Sciences Corp. became only the second company to accomplish such a far-flung shipment. The space station astronauts used their ship’s huge robot arm to grab the Cygnus capsule, as the two vessels zoomed 260 miles above the Indian Ocean.

Inspectors who will oversee Syria’s destruction of its chemical weapons said Sunday their first priority is to help the country scrap its ability to manufacture such arms by a Nov. 1 deadline – using every means possible. The inspectors said that may include smashing mixing equipment with sledgehammers.

A Greek lawmaker sought by police surrendered on Sunday, bringing to six the number of legislators from the extreme-right Golden Dawn party now in custody and accused of being members of a criminal organization with intent to commit crimes. The government crackdown on the fiercely anti-immigrant party marks the first time since 1974 that sitting members of a Greek Parliament have been arrested.

The prime ministers of India and Pakistan met in New York Sunday, and in a step toward easing tension, agreed on the need to stop the recent spate of attacks in the disputed Kashmir region. They also both accepted invitations to visit each other’s countries, although they didn’t set dates. But the nuclear rivals appeared at odds over whether an end to the Kashmir violence is necessary for stalled peace talks to restart, and India reiterated its demand that terrorist activity emanating from Pakistan must stop.

A car bomb exploded on a crowded street in northwestern Pakistan Sunday, killing 37 people in the third blast to hit the troubled city of Peshawar in a week, officials said. Although there was no immediate claim of responsibility, the new government of Nawaz Sharif has said it would like to negotiate with Pakistan’s largest militant group, the Taliban, to end the bloodshed.

Henderson Alvarez pitched a no-hitter with a most bizarre ending, celebrating in the on-deck circle when the Miami Marlins scored on a two-out wild pitch in the bottom of the ninth inning to beat the American League Central champion Detroit Tigers, 1-0, Sunday. It was the first no-hitter to end on a wild pitch, according to STATS, a sports data firm.
