Eight European military observers held prisoner by pro-Russia forces in eastern Ukraine were marched out under armed guard on Sunday to give public assurances that they weren’t being mistreated. Germany’s foreign minister condemned the appearance as “revolting” and a violation of the men’s dignity. Four members of the team are German. One of the observers, a Swedish officer, was released later in the day for medical reasons.

South Korea’s prime minister resigned Sunday over the government’s handling of a ferry sinking that has left more than 300 people dead or missing and led to widespread shame, fury, and finger-pointing, blaming “deep-rooted evils” in society for the tragedy. South Korean executive power is largely concentrated in the president, so Chung Hong-won’s resignation appears to be symbolic. A spokesman for President Park Geun-hye said she would accept the resignation, but did not say when Chung would leave office.

Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas on Sunday called the Holocaust “the most heinous crime” of modern history and expressed his sympathy for the victims, a rare acknowledgment by an Arab leader of Jewish suffering during the Nazi genocide. Abbas’s comments appeared, in part, aimed at reaching out to Israeli public opinion at a time of deep crisis in Israeli-Palestinian peace efforts. The remarks were published by WAFA, the Palestinian official news agency, just hours before the start of Israel’s annual Holocaust commemoration.

President Obama opened a long-awaited visit to Malaysia on Saturday, following stops in Japan and South Korea, and ahead of a visit to the Philippines. During visits to US allies, Obama has signaled that American military power can blunt Chinese aggression in the Asia-Pacific region, even as he urges Beijing to use its growing clout to help resolve international disputes with Russia and North Korea.

President Obama is again encouraging Congress to pass a bill raising the minimum raise to $10.10 an hour. In his weekly radio and Internet address, Obama says increasing the pay for minimum-wage workers would help 28 million workers. In the Republican address, House Speaker John Boehner says the federal government needs to get out of the way as small businesses try to plan for the future.

Heavily armed peacekeepers escorted some of the last remaining Muslims out of Central African Republic’s volatile capital, Bangui, on Sunday, trucking more than 1,300 people who for months had been trapped by violent Christian militants. Within minutes of the convoy’s departure, an angry swarm of neighbors descended upon the mosque in a scene of anarchy.

The US military will have greater access to bases across the Philippines under a new 10-year agreement set to be signed today in conjunction with President Obama’s visit and seen as an effort by Washington to counter Chinese aggression in the region.
