In candid, face-to-face talks, Vice President Joe Biden and Chinese President Xi Jinping traded arguments Wednesday over China’s contentious new air defense zone, with no consensus about how to defuse an issue that’s raising anxieties across Asia and beyond. The US will now wait to see whether China, despite international pressure, will enforce the zone – a strip of airspace more than 600 miles long above disputed islands in the East China Sea.

A private survey shows US businesses last month added the most jobs in a year, powered by big gains in manufacturing and construction. Payroll processor ADP said Wednesday that companies and small businesses added 215,000 jobs in November. And ADP said private employers added 184,000 jobs in October, much stronger than its initial estimate of 130,000.

Hundreds of unsolved killings and attempted killings in Germany over the past two decades may have been committed by far-right extremists, officials said Wednesday. The stark admission comes two years after police acknowledged that a series of murders they had initially linked to immigrant criminal groups was likely the work of a secretive neo-Nazi group.

The European Commission has fined a group of major global banks a total of €1.7 billion ($2.3 billion) for colluding to profit from the manipulation of key interest rates. The banks, which include JP Morgan, Citigroup, and HSBC, are accused
of manipulating for years European and Japanese benchmark interest rates that affect hundreds of billions of dollars in contracts globally, from mortgages to credit-card bills.

Wildlife workers in boats struggled Wednesday to coax nearly four dozen pilot whales out of dangerously shallow waters in Florida’s Everglades National Park, hoping to spare them after 10 others have died. Rescuers were trying to surround the whales with boats about 75 feet from shore and nudge them out to sea. How long the whales have been stranded isn’t known.

The US trade deficit fell in October, helped by America’s energy boom, which lifted exports to an all-time high. The trade gap narrowed to $40.6 billion in October, the Commerce Department said Wednesday. That’s 5.4 percent lower than the September gap of $43 billion, which was higher than initially estimated.

Seventy percent of feature-length silent films made in America have been lost due to decay and neglect over the past 100 years, allowing an original 20th-century art form to all but disappear, according to a study released Wednesday. The Library of Congress conducted the first comprehensive survey of silent films over the past two years.

Paper copies of Newsweek will again roll off the presses starting next year. Editor in chief Jim Impoco says the news magazine’s owners, IBT Media, want to “hit the reset button” and move to a business model that would mainly rely on subscription fees instead of advertising. to support a weekly magazine.
