Al Qaeda's affiliate Nusra Front in Syria has killed at least 20 villagers belonging to the minority Druze sect after a confrontation in northwestern Idlib province, where the militants have forced hundreds of members of the sect to covert to Sunni Islam, an activist group and a Syrian opposition faction said Thursday. The killings in Idlib are the deadliest against the minority Druze sect, which has been split between supporters and opponents of President Bashar al Assad, since Syria's crisis began in March 2011.

China's former security chief was sentenced Thursday to life in prison on corruption charges, in a victory for President Xi Jinping's anti-graft campaign seen as further cementing his authority by removing a potential challenger. Zhou Yongkang, a former member of the ruling Communist Party's all-powerful Politburo Standing Committee, is the biggest target to fall in Xi's drive to end the longstanding culture of bribe taking and influence peddling among officials.

A Virginia 17-year-old pleaded guilty in US federal court to charges of conspiring to help Islamic State militants, the Justice Department said on Thursday. Ali Amin, of Manassas, Virginia, used social media to provide instructions on how to use the virtual currency Bitcoin to send funds to militants, and he helped another Virginia resident travel to Syria to join the group, the department said. Amin faces up to 15 years in prison, the department said.

A landslide triggered by heavy rainfall buried at least 21 people and left dozens missing as they were sleeping at night in six villages in Nepal's mountainous northeast, officials said Thursday. Rescuers dug out the bodies and searched the rubble for survivors in Taplejung district, 310 miles east of the capital, Kathmandu, said police official Shanti Raj. At least 24 people are missing but the number could be higher, he said.

International creditors sent Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras home from a summit Thursday with a clear message: swiftly tone down your demands in the bailout talks over the next week or face financial ruin. The International Monetary Fund took the toughest stance, saying it was bringing its negotiators back to Washington as there had been no sign of compromise. The creditors — the IMF and Greece's fellow eurozone states — want the country to commit to new economic reforms before they pay out another $8.2 billion.
