The two-week-old search for two escaped murderers focused on a rural area about 20 miles away from the upstate New York prison they fled, authorities said on Monday, after evidence reportedly showed the pair had been inside a burglarized cabin. CNN, citing an unidentified law enforcement source, said the escapees' DNA was found on items in a cabin in Owls Head, New York.

Kurdish-led forces advanced on Monday deep into territory in Syria held by Islamic State, showing new momentum after they unexpectedly swiftly seized a border crossing from the jihadists last week. The Kurds, aided by US-led air strikes and smaller Syrian rebel groups, have pushed to within 4 miles of Ain Issa, a town 30 miles north of Islamic State's de facto capital Raqqa city, said Redur Xelil, spokesman for the Kurdish forces.

Failure to act on climate change could cause an estimated 57,000 deaths in the United States from poor air quality by 2100, the Obama administration argued in a new report Monday that warns of dire effects of global warming. The report underscores the costs of inaction on climate change as well as the benefits from taking action now. The administration estimates that 12,000 people in 49 US cities could die from extreme temperatures in 2100.

Prominent Al Jazeera journalist Ahmed Mansour walked free from a Berlin prison on Monday, drawing a line under an awkward diplomatic incident for Germany two days after he was detained at Egypt's request. Ahmed Mansou was released after Egypt was unable to dispel concerns about the extradition process, the Berlin public prosecutor's office said in a statement. A Cairo court sentenced Mansour - a joint British-Egyptian national - to 15 years in prison in absentia last year on a charge of torturing a lawyer in 2011 in Tahrir Square, the focus of the uprising that toppled Hosni Mubarak. Mansour and Al Jazeera deny the charge.

Former Federal Reserve chief-turned-blogger Ben Bernanke is calling for the US Treasury to abandon plans to drop Alexander Hamilton from his featured spot on the $10 bill and to dump Andrew Jackson from the $20 instead. Bernanke wrote Monday that he is "appalled" by Treasury Secretary Jacob Lew's plans to replace Hamilton with a woman. In a post entitled "Say it ain't so, Jack," Bernanke wrote that adding a woman is "a fine idea, but it shouldn't come at Hamilton's expense."

A massive federal habitat restoration effort in the Columbia River Basin has spent more than $700 million on breaching levies, restoring tidal channels, reconnecting floodplains and other actions meant to boost salmon and steelhead populations imperiled by hydroelectric dams. Experts say it's likely the largest, most intensive, and most expensive habitat restoration program in the nation. Critics of the plan say relying heavily on habitat improvements is not enough to restore wild fish runs and take them off the endangered species list. The plan has changed over the past two decades after several legal challenges; the latest version has also been challenged in court and is scheduled to be debated in front of a judge Tuesday.
