President Barack Obama said Sunday the Islamic State group "cannot strike a mortal blow" against the U.S., and he warned that overreacting to the Paris attacks would play into extremists' hands. "We will destroy this terrorist organization," he vowed. Ending a trip to Asia, Obama implored Americans not to let the specter of terror cause them to compromise their values or change the way they live.

The assault on a luxury hotel in Mali's capital that killed 19 people may have been an attempt to derail a fragile peace process meant to stabilize the country's volatile north, a representative of northern separatist groups said Sunday. A local branch of al-Qaeda claimed responsibility for Friday's attack, potentially a sign of deadly one-upsmanship between the remnants of al-Qaeda and their rivals in the Islamic State.

Migrants barred from crossing the Greece-Macedonia border held a fourth day of protests Sunday, as Macedonia's president criticized the European Union over the refugee crisis for a lack of financial support and data sharing. Several European countries, including EU members Slovenia and Croatia and non-members Serbia and Macedonia, have declared they will only allow "war-zone refugees" from Afghanistan, Iraq and Syria to transit through their countries on their way to central and northern Europe.

Donald Trump on Sunday refused to rule out an independent bid for president in 2016 if he loses the GOP nomination, and he dug in on creating a database to track Muslims in the U.S. Trump has pledged to be the toughest of all candidates toward people posing threats to the U.S. On Sunday said he would back ways to track Muslims in the U.S. and also bring back waterboarding on terrorism suspects.

Democrats in Louisiana rejoiced as they reclaimed the governor's mansion for the first time in eight years, while the state's GOP leader insisted "our Republican brand is strong" even amid the defeat of a one-time political powerhouse, Republican U.S. Sen. David Vitter. John Bel Edwards' victory in Saturday's runoff election was once-unthinkable in the conservative state and a stunning turn of events for Vitter, who started his campaign nearly two years ago as the race's front-runner. With his 12-percentage point loss, Vitter announced he wouldn't seek re-election to the Senate in 2016.

The first significant wintry storm of the season blanketed parts of the Midwest with a over a foot of snow, creating hazardous conditions as some travelers prepared to depart for the Thanksgiving holiday and grounding flights at Chicago O'Hare over the weekend. While winter has not officially begun, the shovels and snowblowers were out from South Dakota and southern Minnesota, to Iowa, Wisconsin and northern Illinois.
