A French satellite scanning the Indian Ocean for remnants of a missing jetliner found a possible plane debris field containing 122 objects, a top Malaysian official said Wednesday, calling it “the most credible lead that we have.” Defense Minister Hishammuddin Hussein said the objects were more than 1,550 miles southwest of Australia, in the area where a desperate, multinational hunt has been going on since other satellites detected possible jet debris.

A Pakistani government team held direct talks with the Taliban after traveling Wednesday to a secret location in the country’s northwest, part of a push by Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif to strike a peace deal to end an insurgency that has killed thousands of people in recent years.

North Korea test-fired two medium-range ballistic missiles on Wednesday, South Korea and the US said, a defiant challenge to a rare three-way summit of its rivals Seoul, Tokyo, and Washington that focused on the North’s security threat. The launch of the Rodong missiles – for the first time since 2009 – violates UN Security Council resolutions and marks a big escalation from a series of shorter-range rocket launches the North has staged in recent weeks to protest ongoing annual military drills by the US and South Korea. The missiles flew about 400 miles.

President Obama arrived Wednesday in Rome, where he’ll meet with Pope Francis and Italian political leaders. This follows his three days of talks on Ukraine with European leaders in the Netherlands and Brussels.

Abdel-Fattah el-Sissi, the Egyptian military chief who last summer removed the elected Islamist president, announced Wednesday that he has resigned from the military and will run for president in elections scheduled for next month. Egyptian law says only civilians can run for president, so his resignation from the military, as well as his posts of military chief and defense minister, was a required step.

Facebook is buying virtual reality company Oculus for $2 billion in hopes that its technology will become a new way for people to communicate, learn, or be entertained. Irvine, Calif.-based Oculus VR Inc. makes the Oculus Rift, a virtual reality headset that’s received a lot of attention from video game developers but hasn’t yet been released for consumers.

New York State has the most segregated public schools in the nation, with many black and Latino students attending schools with virtually no white classmates, according to a report released Wednesday. The report by the Civil Rights Project at the University of California at Los Angeles looks at enrollment trends from 1989 to 2010.

Nissan is recalling almost 990,000 cars, SUVs, and minivans in the US because the front passenger air bags may not inflate in a crash. The company says that the vehicles’ computer software may not detect an adult in the passenger seat. If that happens, the air bags won’t inflate.
