Militants in the Gaza Strip fired two rockets toward Israel Israel on Monday, one of which was shot down by the country’s powerful missile defense system, the military said. The Army said the defense battery – known as the “Iron Dome” – intercepted one rocket above the city of Ashkelon. It said the military was searching for the second launched. No injuries were reported in the attack.

The global chemical weapons watchdog says its inspectors in Syria have not been able to reach two sites because of security concerns, meaning that one of the first in a series of tight deadlines on the path toward destroying the country’s poison gas stockpile by mid-2014 has been missed.

A federal judge has determined that new Texas abortion restrictions violate the US Constitution, a ruling that keeps open – at least for now – dozens of abortion clinics that were set to halt operations today had key parts of the law taken effect. A savage coastal storm powered by hurricane-force gusts slashed its way through Britain and western Europe on Monday, snarling traffic in the air, at sea, and on land. At least 13 people were reported killed. It was one of the worst storms to hit the region in years. The deadly tempest had no formal name – and wasn’t officially classified as a hurricane due to a meteorological standard – but it was dubbed stormageddon on social networks.

The United States could lose access to an important law enforcement tool used to track terrorist money flows, German officials said Monday, as Europe weighs a response to allegations that the Americans spied on their closest European allies. Spain became the latest US ally to demand answers after a Spanish newspaper reported that the National Security Agency monitored more than 60 million phone calls in that country during one month alone.

China on Monday put on trial three activists from a group that used protest banners and dinner parties to urge citizens to embrace their constitutional rights, underscoring the Communist Party’s intolerance of any semblance of organized political challenge. The trial of grass-roots rights advocates Liu Ping, Wei Zhongping, and Li Sihua at a district court in Xinyu city in eastern Jiangxi Province was held under tight security.

Penn State said Monday it is paying $59.7 million to 26 young men over claims of child sexual abuse at the hands of former assistant football coach Jerry Sandusky, a man once revered as a university icon who is now serving what is effectively a life prison sentence. Nearly two years after the retired coach was first charged with child molestation, the school said 23 deals were fully signed and three were agreements in principle. It did not disclose the names of the recipients.
