At an emotional press conference barely two days after he was freed from a Russian jail, Mikhail Khodorkovsky vowed Sunday to do all he can to ensure the release of other political prisoners in Russia. The former oil tycoon spent 10 years in jail on what the West considers trumped-up political charges by President Vladimir Putin’s government. He was pardoned Friday by Putin and immediately flew to Berlin, where spoke to the press Sunday.

In a rare public apology, the militant leader of Al Qaeda’s branch in Yemen has said that one of his fighters disobeyed orders and attacked a hospital attached to the Defense Ministry during a December assault that killed 52 people. Qassim al-Rimi, commander of Al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula, said in a video posted on militant websites that the attackers were warned in advance not to enter the hospital.

Gunfire hit three US military aircraft trying to evacuate American citizens in a remote region of South Sudan that on Saturday became a battle ground between the country’s military and renegade troops, officials said. Four US service members were wounded in the attack in the same region where gunfire downed a UN helicopter the day before.

James Clapper, the director of US national intelligence, on Saturday declassified more documents that outline how the National Security Agency was first authorized to start collecting bulk phone and Internet records in the hunt for Al Qaeda terrorists and how a court eventually gained oversight of the program. The declassification came after the Justice Department complied with a federal court order to release its previous legal arguments for keeping the programs secret.

President Obama opened his annual Hawaii vacation Saturday on a quiet note – and hoped it would stay that way for the next two weeks. The president has no public events scheduled during his vacation, which is expected to last through Jan. 5.

An Egyptian court handed down prison sentences to three of the country’s most prominent youth activists Sunday in the first use of a controversial new protest law, a harsh warning to the secular groups that supported the military’s ouster of Islamist president Mohamed Morsi but have since grown critical of the Army-backed government that replaced him.

A suburban Denver high school student who was shot in the head by a classmate died Saturday afternoon, hospital officials said. Claire Davis was in critical condition after being shot at Arapahoe High School on Dec. 13. Davis appeared to be a random target of Karl Pierson, a fellow student who fatally shot himself.

The first full day of winter brought a wild mix of weather across the US on Sunday: ice and high winds in the Great Lakes and New England areas, flooding in the South, snow in the Midwest, and record-shattering temperatures in the 60s and 70s along the mid-Atlantic.
