The European Union suspended talks with Russia on a wide-ranging economic pact and a visa agreement Thursday in response to its military incursion into Ukraine’s Crimean Peninsula, threatening tougher sanctions unless Moscow swiftly defuses the crisis. The moves at an emergency EU summit came on the heels of visa and financial sanctions the Obama administration imposed on Russians and Ukrainians over the military incursion into Crimea.

Bombings targeting shoppers across central Iraq and clashes near the militant-held city of Fallujah killed at least 42 people Thursday, authorities said. No one claimed responsibility for the string of bombings that began Thursday afternoon, mostly from bombs in parked cars and one explosive planted in an outdoor market. However, they bore the hallmarks of Al Qaeda and other Sunni insurgents, who frequently use car bombs and suicide attacks to target public areas and government buildings in their bid to undermine confidence in the Shiite-led government.

The Senate on Thursday blocked a bill that would have stripped senior military commanders of their authority to prosecute or prevent charges for alleged rapes and other serious offenses, capping an emotional, nearly yearlong fight over how to curb sexual assault in the ranks. The vote was 55 to 45, short of the 60 votes necessary to move ahead on the legislation sponsored by Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand (D) of New York.

As the girlfriend he shot lay dead or dying in his home, a weeping, praying Oscar Pistorius knelt at her side and struggled in vain to help her breathe, a witness testified Thursday in Pretoria, South Africa, at the double-amputee runner’s murder trial. “I shot her. I thought she was a burglar. I shot her,” Johan Stipp, a neighbor, recalled Pistorius saying. The worried neighbor had entered Pistorius’s home after hearing screams. By that time, the celebrated athlete had carried Reeva Steenkamp’s body downstairs following the fatal nighttime shooting in his bathroom. Stipp’s account was the first detailed, public description of the immediate aftermath of the shooting.

One of Muammar Qaddafi’s sons, Saadi, was extradited on Thursday to Libya from Niger, where he had taken refuge as his father’s regime crumbled in 2011, bringing cheers from Libyans as the government prepares to prosecute him for his alleged role in trying to suppress the uprising against Qaddafi’s rule. Saadi becomes the second son of the ousted and slain leader to be held in custody in Libya. His brother Saif al-Islam was captured in 2011 and has been held in a western mountain prison by a militia that is putting him on trial, refusing to hand him over to the central government for trial.

Tevye is coming back to New York’s Great White Way. Producers Jeffrey Richards and Jerry Frankel said Thursday that they will present a revival of “Fiddler on the Roof” – one of the last great musicals of Broadway’s golden age – in the fall of 2015. It will be the show’s fifth revival.
