The American airstrike that may have killed a number of Iraqi soldiers on Friday seems to be "a mistake that involved both sides," U.S. Defense Secretary Ash Carter said Saturday. He called Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi to express condolences. Speaking to reporters during a visit to the USS Kearsarge in the Persian Gulf, Carter said the incident near the western Iraqi city of Fallujah was "regrettable."

"Star Wars: The Force Awakens" had the biggest North American opening of all time, bringing in a galactic $238 million over the weekend according to studio estimates on Sunday, plus an additional $279 million overseas. The Walt Disney Co. earnings destroy the previous opening record set by Universal's "Jurassic World," which drew $208.8 million this summer. Analysts predict the film may make as much as $2 billion worldwide over the course of its run.

A strong showing by a pair of upstart parties in Spain's general election on Sunday may upend the country's traditional two-party system, with results showing the ruling Popular Party won the most votes but fell far short of a parliamentary majority and risked being booted from power. Days or weeks of negotiations could be needed to determine who will govern Spain, with the new far left Podemos and business-friendly Ciudadanos parties producing shockwaves because of strong support from voters weary of the country's political status quo.

Bernie Sanders apologized to Hillary Clinton and his own supporters Saturday night for a breach of her campaign's valuable voter data, seeking to put the controversy to rest during the Democratic primary debate. Clinton, the Democratic front-runner, instead kept an eye on the general election, sharply criticizing Donald Trump's plan to ban Muslims from entering the United States. She called the leader of the GOP race the Islamic State's "best recruiter."

China's Defense Ministry on Saturday accused the US of committing a "serious military provocation" after the US flew an Air Force B-52 bomber over a Chinese-controlled man-made island in the South China Sea, and reiterated that it would do whatever necessary to protect Chinese sovereignty. As is China's usual practice, the Foreign Ministry took a more diplomatic tone. Foreign Minister Wang Yi said that the situation was essentially stable, but that outside nations should not "manufacture tensions."

After the release of election results, several government buildings have been set ablaze in scattered sections of Haiti and one demonstrator was killed in violent protests, officials said Saturday. Street demonstrations and clashes between factions troubled several towns around the Caribbean country, though the crowded capital of Port-au-Prince and most other areas of the country of 10 million people were peaceful Saturday. In parts of northern and southern Haiti, angry partisans insisted that the results released late Friday by the much-criticized electoral council did not reflect voters' will. Presidential and legislative runoffs are scheduled for next weekend amid numerous accusations of fraud and manipulation of results.
