A US official says the target of raid by Navy SEALs in Somalia over the weekend was a Kenyan man named Abdulkadir Mohamed Abdulkadir. A Kenyan government intelligence document names him as the coordinator of other planned attacks. The man, also known as Ikrima, was a known operator for the Somali militant group Al Shabab. The document says that foiled plots by Abdulkadir included plans to target Kenya’s parliament building and the United Nations office in Nairobi, as well as an Ethiopian restaurant patronized by Somali government officials. It does not appear that Saturday’s raid resulted in the killing or capture of Abdulkadir.

Syrian troops wrested control of a key road linking the government-held heartland with the embattled northern city of Aleppo, reopening the crucial supply route after heavy fighting with rebels, state media and activists said Monday. Government forces and opposition fighters have been locked in a block-by-block fight for Aleppo since rebels launched an assault on the city 15 months ago.

Airbus secured its first-ever order from Japan Airlines on Monday in a deal that undermines Boeing’s long-held dominance of Japan’s aviation market. Japan Airlines is to buy 31 A350 planes from the European aircraft manufacturer. The purchase has a list value of 950 billion yen ($9.5 billion) and marks a big change in policy as Boeing had been JAL’s major supplier for decades. JAL also has an option to buy 25 more Airbus planes.

A delegation of Israeli lawmakers paid a rare visit to the West Bank on Monday to meet Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas and give an emotional boost to fledgling peace talks that have faced deep skepticism on both sides.

The Supreme Court won’t hear an appeal of a Florida lawsuit, making it easier for sick smokers or their survivors to pursue lawsuits against tobacco companies. The court on Monday refused to hear an appeal from Philip Morris USA Inc., R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co., and Liggett Group LLC. They wanted the court to consider overturning a $2.5 million Tampa jury verdict in the death of smoker Charlotte Douglas.

The new $100 bill, with an array of high-tech features designed to thwart counterfeiters, will get its coming out party today, partial US government shutdown or not. The bills took more than a decade to develop and the introduction was plagued by production problems that set back the rollout by 2-1/2 years.

The longtime secretary of imprisoned financer Bernard Madoff and four other back-office subordinates of the Ponzi king are going to trial today as the government for the first time shows a jury what it has collected in its five-year probe of one of history’s biggest frauds. The trial in federal court in Manhattan is expected to last up to five months and feature the unveiling of the government’s prize witness – Frank DiPascali, Madoff’s former finance chief.
