Minimizing sharp differences, President Obama and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu reaffirmed their commitment to seeking elusive Middle East peace on Monday, though prospects for an agreement between Israelis and Palestinians appear ever further out of reach. The US and Israeli leaders' meeting at the White House marked the first time they had talked face-to-face in more than a year. They have long had a frosty relationship, and tensions peaked earlier this year amid Obama's pursuit of an Iran nuclear deal that Netanyahu vigorously opposed. Monday's meeting was an attempt to reset ties for the final year of Obama's presidency.

The party of opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi claimed victory Monday in virtually every seat in four states where results of Myanmar's historic parliamentary election were known, signaling a sweep that could give it the presidency and further loosen the military's stranglehold. The announcement at the headquarters of the National League for Democracy set off a new round of jubilation among the party's red-shirted supporters, who already had been celebrating the result of Sunday's vote.

A Jordanian police officer opened fire Monday at a regional police training center in the Jordanian capital, killing two Americans, two Jordanians, and a South African before being shot dead, the Jordanian government spokesman said. Two Americans, four Jordanians and a Lebanese were wounded in the shooting, said the spokesman, Mohammed Momani. He said authorities are investigating whether the motive for the shooting was personal or political.

A judge set bail at $1 million each on Monday for two Louisiana law enforcement officers jailed on murder charges in the shooting death of a 6-year-old autistic boy who was strapped into a child safety seat in the back of his father's car. The father of 6-year-old Jeremy Mardis, Chris Few, also was shot last Tuesday and remained hospitalized Monday, said his attorney, Mark Jeansonne.

Russia could be banned from next year's Olympics in Rio de Janeiro after a devastatingly critical World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) report accused the country's government of complicity in widespread doping and cover-ups by its track and field athletes. The WADA commission set up to investigate doping in Russia said even the country's intelligence service, the FSB, was involved, spying on Moscow's anti-doping lab, including during last year's Olympics in Sochi. The commission chaired by Dick Pound recommended that WADA immediately declare the Russian athletics federation "non-compliant" with the global anti-doping code, and that the IAAF suspend the federation from competition.

The National Weather Service's Storm Prediction Center is warning 36 million people of possibly impending storms and tornadoes in the central United States this week. “An increasing risk for severe thunderstorms and tornadoes is still expected for Wednesday, November 11,” the organization writes in a Facebook post Monday. “Our current expectations are for severe thunderstorms to develop in the Great Plains Wednesday morning.” According to the AP, the weather threat spans from San Antonio to Chicago, and then to Cincinnati. The regions facing the highest risk of severe weather are Missouri, northern Arkansas, and southern Illinois.

Carbon dioxide levels in the planet’s atmosphere hit a record high in 2014 – the 30th year in a row that record has been broken – spurring scientists to proclaim the planet is now in "uncharted territory" just weeks before international climate negotiations are scheduled to begin in Paris. The figures are released annually by the World Meteorological Organization, a UN agency. The organization's report on Monday shows that CO2 levels averaged 397.7 parts per million last year, briefly exceeding the 400-ppm threshold in the Northern hemisphere in early 2014, and again globally in early 2015.
