Hundreds of Boko Haram fighters attacked Cameroonian troops at a border town with Nigeria, military officers said Wednesday as Nigerian and Chadian jets pursued an offensive that has bombed the Islamic extremists out of a slew of northeastern Nigerian towns. The attack on Fotocol, in far northern Cameroon, appeared to be a response to the air attacks, Nigeria's first major offensive against Boko Haram, the Islamic extremists whose insurgency has spread across borders, prompting international concern.

An Egyptian court sentenced prominent activist Ahmed Douma to life in prison on Wednesday, judicial sources said, part of a sustained crackdown on Islamist and liberal government opponents. Douma, a leading figure in the pro-democracy revolt that toppled autocrat Hosni Mubarak, was convicted of rioting, inciting violence and attacking security forces in late 2011. The court also sentenced 229 others to life in jail in absentia for the same charges.

Rescuers used a crane to hoist the fuselage of a wrecked TransAsia Airways plane from a shallow river in Taiwan's capital late Wednesday as they searched into the night for 17 people missing in a crash that killed at least 26 others. Flight 235 with 58 people aboard – most of them travelers from China – banked sharply on its side shortly after takeoff from Taipei, clipped a highway bridge and then careened into the Keelung River.

The rapidly changing tools of the work place and the way we shop has led to another major consolidation in the retail office supply business as Staples announced the $6 billion acquisition of rival Office Depot. The cash-and-stock deal deal comes a little more than a year after Office Depot combined with OfficeMax, with too many stores fighting for too few sales.

Investigators examining the death of a prosecutor who accused Argentine President Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner of agreeing to shield the alleged masterminds of a 1994 terror bombing said Tuesday they have found a draft document he wrote requesting her arrest. Chief investigator Viviana Fein said the draft detention request was found in a trash bin of the apartment where Alberto Nisman's body was discovered on Jan. 18. It was not included in a complaint the prosecutor had filed in federal court days earlier.

More than 1,000 people with a northeast Ohio religious coalition have presented their recommendations for reforming the Cleveland Police Department. Leaders from area faith coalition Greater Cleveland Congregations presented their recommendations for police reform to local and federal officials at the Olivet Institutional Baptist Church on Tuesday night. Among the group's recommendations were use-of force changes, increased accountability and transparency, better training and diversified personnel.

As federal authorities seek to extradite a deep-sea treasure hunter arrested last week after more than two years as a fugitive, his former business associates want to know what happened to millions of dollars' worth of gold he recovered from a historic shipwreck. Tommy Thompson is scheduled for an extradition hearing Wednesday in a federal court in Florida. He's being held on an arrest warrant filed after he failed to appear in an Ohio courtroom to explain what happened to all the gold he recovered from a 19th-century shipwreck off the South Carolina coast.

Heavy shelling in the rebel stronghold of Donetsk in eastern Ukraine on Wednesday afternoon killed at least five people and damaged a hospital, six schools and five kindergartens, local officials said. The fighting between Russia-backed separatists and government troops in eastern Ukraine resumed in January after a month of relative calm, killing more than 200 people in the past three weeks, according to the United Nations.
