Amid the bickering and inflammatory rhetoric that have marked the 2016 presidential campaign, six candidates have vowed to find common ground on the nation's future, according to a bipartisan group formed to bridge the gap between Republicans and Democrats. No Labels, established in 2010, has put out a call for candidates to adopt a four-goal plan related to job creation, entitlements, the federal budget, and energy. Those who sign on must pledge to promote the plan during the campaign, and if elected, work with both parties in Congress on at least one of the goals within a month of taking office. Six candidates have so far agreed to take the pledge: Republicans Ben Carson, Chris Christie, John Kasich, Rand Paul, and Donald Trump, and Democrat Martin O'Malley.

The Islamic State (IS) group claimed responsibility for a mall attack in Baghdad that killed 18 people on Monday. Gunmen stormed into the Jawhara Mall after setting off a car bomb and launching a suicide attack at its entrance. Iraqi officials say the attack which lasted over an hour, killed at least 18 people and wounded 50 in the city's mainly Shiite east. The IS statement, posted online shortly after the attack, said a car bomb and four IS fighters carried out the attack, targeting an area where many Shiite Muslims are known to gather and warned of "worse" to come.

General Motors went to trial Monday in a lawsuit over its 2014 recall of millions of vehicles – the latest development in the automaker’s long-running legal battle over faulty ignition switches. The case comes as the company is celebrating a record sales year and President Obama is taking credit for saving the Detroit automaker from bankruptcy. But some have questioned whether the administration helped GM by slowing down the recall on the ignition switches.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation caught a woman suspected in a slew of jewelry store robberies across the South, court records show. Abigail Lee Kemp’s alleged five-state crime spree came to an end Friday after the FBI identified her through a combination of technology and traditional police work: analyzing cell phone records and video surveillance, monitoring social media, and following up on calls from a few suspicious friends.

David Bowie, the chameleon-like star who transformed the sound — and the look — of rock with his audacious creativity and his sexually ambiguous makeup and costumes, died Sunday. Bowie, whose hits included "Space Oddity," ''Fame," ''Heroes" and "Let's Dance," died surrounded by family, representative Steve Martin said early Monday. The singer, who was 69, had been dealing with a long-term illness. Long before alter egos and wild outfits became commonplace in pop, Bowie turned the music world upside down with the release of the 1972 album, "The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars" which introduced one of music's most famous personas.

In May, 11 elephants touring with The Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus will retire, permanently ending the 145-year-old circus’ iconic elephant show. The parent company of the circus, Feld Entertainment, is ending its elephant acts a year and a half earlier than it promised to back in March, said its president Kenneth Feld, because it realized after it started planning that it could accelerate the process. The retiring Asian elephants will join a herd of 42 others already living at the company's 200-acre Center for Elephant Conservation in central Florida, which one day may open to the public, said Mr. Feld earlier this year.
