Israel’s defense minister was quoted Tuesday as deriding US Secretary of State John
Kerry’s Mideast peace efforts as naive and foolhardy, triggering an angry response from Washington and rekindling simmering tensions with Israel’s closest and most important ally. The quotes appeared ahead of another visit by Kerry, who is expected in the region in the coming weeks to deliver his ideas on a framework for peace between Israel and the Palestinians.

Downtown businesses and restaurants began to reopen after water was declared safe to drink in portions of West Virginia’s capital, but life has yet to return to normal for most of the 300,000 people who haven’t been able to use running water in the five days since a chemical spill. It could still be days before everyone in the Charleston area is cleared to use water.

Israeli police say they briefly pulled over the Palestinian Authority prime minister’s convoy for reckless driving in the West Bank, sparking a diplomatic spat. While police say they quickly allowed the convoy to pass, the Palestinians say the incident was a violation of their rights. Police said Rami Hamdallah’s car and another vehicle were stopped Tuesday for speeding and “overtaking every vehicle in a dangerous way.”

More Target-sized security breaches will happen if banks and retail stores don’t start working together to further protect customers’ data, JPMorgan Chase CEO Jamie Dimon said Tuesday. JPMorgan has replaced 2 million credit and debit cards as a result of the breach, said Dimon in his first public comments about the event. The bank has replaced nearly all the affected cards.

Prosecutors say 31 people suspected to be behind a 2012 wave of methanol poisoning in the Czech Republic are to stand trial. Prosecutor Jan Sladky says seven of them, including the two believed to have produced the deadly blend of toxic methanol with drinking alcohol and the main distributor, have been charged with endangering public health and face up to life in prison if convicted. Sladky said Tuesday the suspects are believed to be responsible for the death of 38 people.

US holiday shoppers were more than willing to spend during the holiday season, if they saw big discounts or were shopping online. Sales rose 3.8 percent from last year for November and December combined, according to the National Retail Federation’s analysis of federal figures.

The Mexican government moved in to quell violence between vigilantes and a drug cartel in Michoacan state, but the campaign turned deadly early Tuesday with a confrontation between soldiers and civilians who witnesses say were unarmed. There were widely varying reports of casualties.

Two Serbian former senior secret service officials have been arrested over the killing of a prominent independent Serb journalist and publisher nearly 15 years ago. Police say former Belgrade spy agency head Milan Radonjic and operations chief Ratko Romic were arrested Tuesday under suspicion they planned the assassination of Slavko Curuvija in 1999.

In a decision that could reshape consumers’ access to entertainment, news, and other online content, a federal appeals court Tuesday set aside Federal Communications Commission rules designed to ensure that transmission of all Internet content be treated equally. The antidiscrimination and antiblocking rules have barred broadband providers from prioritizing some types of Internet traffic over others.

The British government ordered an urgent investigation Tuesday into the possibility that a British officer played a key role in the deadly 1984 raid on India’s Golden Temple after declassified documents suggested a special forces officer advised the Indians on how to carry out the attack. The storming of the Golden Temple in Amritsar was one of the most violent episodes in the Indian government’s battle against Sikh separatists.
