A suicide bomber affiliated with the Islamic State group detonated a bomb in a historic district of Istanbul popular with tourists Tuesday morning, killing at least 10 people – nine of them German tourists – and wounding 15 others, Turkish officials said. The bomber who carried out the attack in Istanbul's Sultanahmet district was a 28-year-old Syrian national, Deputy Prime Minister Numan Kurtulmus said. Turkish Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu said the perpetrator was a member of IS and pledged to battle the militant group until it no longer "remains a threat" to Turkey or the world.

More than 90 congressional Democrats have criticized President Obama's recent immigration raids, ramping up calls from the party's 2016 presidential candidates to stop deporting Central American families who have exhausted legal appeals for asylum. Record levels of people illegally entering the United States from Central America made headlines in 2014, but deceased in 2015 until late last year. Many are children: more than 12,500 families were apprehended in October and November, as well as more than 10,500 unaccompanied minors.

President Obama may be resisting calls to endorse a Democratic presidential candidate, but his vice president came awfully close to endorsing Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders on Monday night. In an interview with CNN, Vice President Joe Biden praised Senator Sanders for his “authentic” voice on income inequality issues, and said that while the Democratic Party has great candidates for the race, Sanders' stance on these issues has made an impression on the public.

The mayor of Detroit is set to tour schools in the district, following rolling teacher strikes and sick-outs that forced more than half of its 100 schools to close on Monday. Mayor Mike Duggan will visit the schools with health and building officials to ascertain the conditions of the schools, after several teachers complained that facilities were infested with rodents and covered with mold. Unlike most mayors, Mr. Duggan has little control over Detroit schools, which have been under state oversight and run by an emergency manager appointed by Republican Gov. Rick Snyder for the past seven years.

The mother of a Texas teenager, now infamous for invoking the "affluenza" defense after killing four people while driving drunk, was released from police custody on Tuesday after posting bail. Tonya Couch was released from Tarrant County Jail in Fort Worth, Texas, after her defense lawyer argued that the initial $1 million bail that the court had set was too high for a third-degree felony. Ms. Couch was arrested while trying to help her son, Ethan Couch, escape to Mexico to avoid possible jail time. She has been charged with hindering the apprehension of a felon and could face 10 years in jail if found guilty.

With one big play after another — by both teams — Alabama beat Clemson, 45-40, late Monday night in the College Football Playoff title game. Heisman Trophy winner Derrick Henry ran for three touchdowns. A daring onside kick with the score tied 24-all led to an Alabama points explosion, with quarterback Jake Coker throwing for two long touchdowns to tight end O.J Howard. Kenyan Drake returned a kickoff 95 yards for another score. Clemson dual-threat quarterback Deshaun Watson threw four touchdown passes and had 478 total yards — 403 passing. He was virtually a one-man show in keeping the Tigers ahead for a while. In the end, it was too much Alabama, and the Tide won their fourth national crown in the past seven years.

After more than a century of household dominance, the incandescent lightbulb seemed to be heading the way of transistor radios and rotary phones, ousted from public favor by newer, more efficient designs. But thanks to researchers at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Purdue University, the lowly incandescent bulb is getting a jolt of new life. A team of six researchers says it has found a way to boost the bulb's efficiency twenty-fold, which would leave today's favored compact fluorescents (CFLs) and light-emitting diodes (LEDs) in the dust, according to a paper published Monday in the journal Nature Nanotechnology.
