Pro-Russian insurgents dislodged government troops from three bases in eastern Ukraine, a new blow to beleaguered armed forces as its president-elect vowed new initiatives to help end the regional mutiny. Billionaire candy magnate Petro Poroshenko, speaking in Warsaw, rejected the interim authorities’ proposal to introduce martial law in Ukraine’s restive east. He said he would seek to pacify the regions with an offer of amnesty and a promise of early regional elections.

A quarter century after Poland embraced democracy, President Obama held up this nation Wednesday as a guidepost for neighboring Ukraine as it seeks to fend off an insurgency widely believed to be backed by Russia that has rekindled cold war-era tensions across Europe. Underneath a now-silent Interstate bridge over which 90,000 tractor-trailers and cars normally rumble every day, engineers and workers in hard hats are using shovels and high-tech sensors to figure out how and why the ground has shifted. The Interstate 495 bridge in Wilmington, Del., was closed Monday after four pairs of support pillars were found to be tilting. Officials do not know when it will reopen. Engineers are hoping to unearth clues that will help them determine how to shore up the bridge over the Christina River, a process officials say is going to take considerable time.

More than 2 million people who got health insurance under President Obama’s law have data discrepancies that could jeopardize coverage for some, a government document shows. About 1 in 4 people who signed up has discrepancies, creating a huge paperwork jam for the Feds and exposing some consumers to repayment demands, or possibly even loss of coverage, if they received too generous a subsidy.

The family of a pregnant American woman who went missing in Afghanistan in late 2012 with her Canadian husband received two videos last year in which the couple asked the US government to help free them from Taliban captors, The Associated Press has learned. The videos offer the first and only clues about what happened to Caitlan Coleman and Joshua Boyle after they lost touch with their families 20 months ago.

Locked in a squeaker of a race, Mississippi Sen. Thad Cochran and tea party-backed challenger Chris McDaniel pointed toward a possible June 24 runoff after battling to a near-draw Tuesday in a primary that underscored Republican differences. Unofficial returns from 99 percent of the state’s precincts showed McDaniel with slightly under 50 percent of the vote in a three-way race and Cochran slightly under 49 percent. It takes a majority by one candidate to avoid a runoff.
