Former CIA Director David Petraeus has agreed to plead guilty to mishandling classified materials, the Justice Department said Tuesday. The case was filed in Charlotte, North Carolina, the hometown of Paula Broadwell, the general's biographer and former mistress. Federal investigators had been looking into whether Petraeus improperly shared classified materials with Broadwell, with whom he admitted having an affair when he resigned from his position in November 2012. A law enforcement official had previously said agents found a substantial number of classified documents on Broadwell's computer and at her home.

One of South America's most active volcanoes erupted early Tuesday in southern Chile, spewing heavy smoke into the air as lava surged down its slopes, prompting authorities to evacuate thousands of people. The Villarrica volcano erupted around 3 a.m. local time, according to the National Emergency Office, which issued a red alert and ordered evacuations. Local media showed images of the volcano bursting at the top, glowing in the dark amid heavy smoke and rivers of lava. Authorities worried that mudslides caused by melting snow could endanger nearby communities. The 9,000 foot volcano in Chile's central valley, 400 miles south of Santiago, sits above the small city of Pucon, which has a population of about 22,000 people.

President Obama's health care overhaul has survived a barrage of Republican-led repeal votes and, barely, a Supreme Court challenge to its constitutionality. Now it's back before the high court facing another line of attack. If Obama loses, many Americans could end up without insurance. The court will examine whether millions of people can continue to receive subsidies that are crucial to the program's goal of providing universal coverage. Opponents say the wording of the law, written by Democrats when they controlled Congress, effectively bars the subsidies for residents of most states. The administration denies that. The nine justices will hear arguments Wednesday.

The US Justice Department on Tuesday concluded that the Ferguson, Missouri police department routinely engages in racially biased practices, according to a law enforcement official familiar with the department's findings. The investigation into the police department began in August after the shooting of unarmed African-American teen Michael Brown by a white police officer in Ferguson sparked national protests. The findings will be used by the Justice Department to either negotiate with Ferguson officials and enter a consent decree or, if negotiations fail, sue the city.

At 656,000 pounds fully loaded and the length of six school buses, the Boeing 777-200ER is hard to miss. Yet nearly one year ago, Malaysia Airlines Flight 370 vanished, taking the lives of 239 passengers and crew in one of aviation's greatest mysteries. Live satellite tracking might have led searchers to the plane, but it wasn't turned on for that trip. The flight was supposed to remain mostly over land, well within the coverage area of ground-based radar stations. Airlines and regulators spent the past year debating how much flight tracking is necessary, balancing the economic costs against reassuring travelers another plane won't disappear. Now a plan is moving forward that would require airlines, by the end of 2016, to know their jets' positions every 15 minutes.

Fiat Chrysler US overcame freezing temperatures and a barrage of Northeast snowstorms to post a 5.6 percent sales gain last month as customers nationwide brushed off the weather and continued to buy cars. The company sold 163,586 cars and trucks to post its best February in eight years, led by the Jeep brand with a 21 percent increase. It was Jeep's best February ever. Chrysler's Ram pickup sales also grew, by 7 percent to more than 31,000, while Jeep Cherokee small SUV sales rose 19 percent to just over 14,000.
