The US Justice Department has given immunity to a former State Department staffer who worked on Hillary Clinton’s private e-mail server, which she used during her work as secretary of State, a senior law enforcement official told The Washington Post. The Federal Bureau of Investigation secured the cooperation of Bryan Pagliano, who worked on Mrs. Clinton’s 2008 presidential campaign before setting up the server in her New York home in 2009, the official told the Post.

Dozens of emaciated-looking Boko Haram members begging for food surrendered in northeast Nigeria, the military and a civilian self-defense fighter said Wednesday. Seventy-six people including children and women gave themselves up to soldiers last Saturday in Gwoza, about 60 miles southeast of Maiduguri, according to a senior officer. The detainees said many more fighters want to surrender, a self-defense civilian fighter who helped escort them to Maiduguri told The Associated Press. Food shortages could indicate that Nigeria's military is succeeding in choking supply routes of the Islamic extremists who have taken their fight across Nigeria's borders.

After nearly a year in space, the best cure is … a blast of fresh air? So said astronaut Scott Kelly, who now holds the record for the longest period an American has spent in space at 340 days, describing his return to the frigid temperatures of Kazakhstan on Wednesday. Feeling the rush of bitterly cold air when the hatch of his Soyuz capsule popped open after touchdown was “amazing,” he told NASA in an interview before returning home to Houston early Thursday. Mr. Kelly was welcomed back to the US by Mark Kelly, his identical twin brother who is a retired astronaut, Scott Kelly’s two daughters, his girlfriend, who has been chronicling his mission as a NASA public affairs officer and his sister-in-law, former Arizona congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords, Mark’s wife.

Home flipping – buying and reselling a home to make a quick buck – has risen in some hot US housing markets, prompting concerns that local housing bubbles could be developing, according to a report published on Thursday. The report by RealtyTrac found that home flipping in 12 active metropolitan areas last year was above a peak set in 2005, just two years before the US mortgage market started to collapse, leading to a banking crisis and the Great Recession.

Despite the disappointing amount of rain delivered to California so far this El Niño, residents of the drought parched state are hopeful that March will be different. Weather experts had predicted that this year’s El Niño winter would bring heavy rain to California and the West Coast, a region that has endured severe drought in the past four years – but of no avail. At first, winter was cold and wet in December and January after storms brought several feet of snow to the Sierra Mountains, one of California’s primary sources of water. But because of warmer than projected water temperatures in February, the month saw much less rainfall than even non-El Niño years.

On Thursday, Amazon introduced two devices in a bid to show the range of roles Alexa, its voice-controlled assistant, could play in users’ homes and lives. The new devices, the Amazon Tap and the Echo Dot, are more affordable varieties of Amazon’s Echo, which was the online marketplace’s first stab at making a connected home product when it launched in 2014. The three gadgets share similarities – setting them up lets them respond to a user’s command, like reading the day’s headlines, changing your home's temperature, or turning off the lights.
