Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu blasted his Palestinian partner in peace-making efforts on Thursday, accusing him of embracing terrorists “as heroes,” harsh words that clouded the start of US Secretary of State John Kerry’s 10th trip to the region to negotiate a peace deal he claims is “not mission impossible.” Kerry arrived in Israel to broker negotiations that are entering a difficult phase aimed at creating a Palestinian state alongside Israel.

A helicopter rescued all 52 passengers from a research ship that has been trapped in Antarctic ice since Christmas Eve after weather conditions finally cleared enough for the operation Thursday. The Chinese helicopter carried the scientists and tourists from the Russian ship MV Akademik Shokalskiy in groups of 12 to an Australian icebreaker, which will take the passengers to the Australian island state of Tasmania.

The new year’s winter weather is threatening icy shock waves for the eastern two-thirds of the US. The first cold blast set records Thursday in Minnesota and is expected to strike the Eastern US today with possibly single-digit temperatures in places. A second blast is expected to move from the Great Plains and Midwest on Sunday and Monday and into the East on Tuesday.

The mystery behind a booby-trapped safe that exploded and killed the Palestinian ambassador in Prague deepened Thursday with the diplomat’s daughter rejecting accounts given by a Palestinian official and suggesting there could be more to the story. Ambassador Jamal al-Jamal died Wednesday when an old embassy safe exploded.

The California Supreme Court granted a law license on Thursday to a man living in the US illegally who graduated from law school and passed the state bar exam. The decision means Sergio Garcia can begin practicing law despite his immigration status. Garcia had challenged a 1996 federal law that bars people living in the country illegally from receiving professional licenses from government agencies or with the use of public funds, unless state lawmakers vote otherwise.

Rwanda’s former spy chief has been found dead, possibly strangled, in a hotel in South Africa, police said Thursday, and opposition leaders immediately accused President Paul Kagame of ordering his assassination. Congress coordinator Theogene Rudasingwa said Karegeya’s death follows a pattern of assassinations ordered by Kagame.

More than half of female Marines in boot camp can’t do three pullups, the minimum standard that was supposed to take effect with the new year, prompting the Marine Corps to delay the requirement, part of the process of equalizing physical standards to integrate women into combat jobs. The delay rekindled sharp debate in the military on the question of whether women have the physical strength for some military jobs, as service branches move toward opening thousands of combat roles to them in 2016.
