South Korea on Wednesday fired 20 machine gun warning shots after a North Korean drone briefly crossed the rivals' border, officials said, the first shots fired in a Cold War-style standoff between the Koreas in the wake of the North's nuclear test last week. The North Korean drone was flying dozens of yards south of the border and turned back to the North after the South fired the shots, South Korean defense and military officials said, requesting anonymity because of office rules. The shots did not hit the drone.

Residents of Flint, Mich., in need of drinking water, will be receiving aid from the National Guard in response to a months-long water crisis in the city. Michigan Gov. Rick Snyder activated the Michigan National Guard Tuesday, with more than 30 members of the reserve force expected to arrive in the Genesee County seat by Friday. The Guardsmen will join the American Red Cross in a relief effort involving state authorities and volunteers to distribute bottled water, water filters, lead testing kits, and more to Flint residents.

The widow of a man killed in the Dec. 2 San Bernardino shootings is suing the county for $58 million. Michael Wetzel was attending a holiday luncheon at the Inland Regional Center on where he worked as an environmental health specialist for San Bernardino County when he was killed in a mass shooting orchestrated by Syed Farook and his wife Tashfeen Malik. Now Michael’s widow, Renee Wetzel, has filed four claims against the county. She is seeking $3 million for loss of wages, $25 million for general damages, and $10 million for each of her three young children for a total of $58 million.

Clouds play an important role in melting Greenland’s ice sheet, say scientists. A team of scientists from the University of Leuven in Belgium have found that clouds are raising the temperature of the Greenland Ice Sheet by up to 3 degrees, contributing to almost 30 percent of the sheet’s melting, according a study published Tuesday in the journal Nature Communications.

A 30 to 2 vote by the National Football League owners opened the door for the St. Louis Rams to move their franchise to Los Angeles this year, leaving many fans in the Gateway to the West upset over the loss of their pro football team. The team’s owner, Stan Kroenke, plans to build a stadium in Inglewood, Calif., a proposal approved in the owners’ vote that authorized the Rams’ application for relocation. While football fans in southern California may be looking forward to the return of a Los Angeles team after a 21-year absence, Rams supporters in the Midwest are not as thrilled about the loss of their team. The Rams played in Los Angeles from 1946 to 1995.

As North American bat populations dwindle, the US Fish and Wildlife Service announced a final rule to protect the mammals’ habitats. The new rule will finalize protections for areas where the northern long-eared bat, or northern myotis, is located, across a range of nearly 40 states and several Canadian provinces. In recent years, the bats have become threatened, largely due to white-nose syndrome, a rapidly spreading disease that wildlife officials have linked to millions of bat deaths.
